Strange Ping problem

Ok..I have one computer that is Win2k Server that is connected to my cable modem. On that box I am running Sygate to share my internet connection. My other machine is a Win2k Pro. They are connected with a 10/100 hub.

Now here is the situation. I want to play Links2001 over the net with my father with me hosting a game. I have Sygate setup to pass all the port info for Links to my machine. He can never connect to my game.

I get his IP address and attempt to ping him. The ping request keeps timing out. I can ping all other sites with no problem. I can play Nascar 4 and all other games online with no problem.

How come I can't ping him. If I run a TRACERT to his IP, it will always timeout right before his box. Also, if I ping him from my Win2k Server machine with Sygate, I can ping him fine. Do you think his ISP is blocking something? I can't figure it out. Just so you know, it has worked before, but very rarely does it work. There are a few times when I can ping his machine, and when I can, the game works fine. I also just reinstall Win2k Pro last week and we are still having this problem.

TIA

Is your father behind a router or ICS setup like you? I wouldn't think that the ISP would be blocking anything unless they are running some sort of Value added Software as a feature that would block things. They should tell your father if they set something like this up. Normally they don't do software like this though, and usually you are on your own.

I doubt that its the game because if it was, a trace route would be able to find his machine. I wouldn't worry about the game until you can actually ping his machine. Anything else is a waste of time till you get that working.

My father just has a plain dial-up connection. No ICS and no firewall.

I was wondering if the ISP is block ping requests from the @home network (I have a cable modem). A lot of hackers out there.
