Strange notebook sound issue

I have a compaq presario 1700T that out of the blue started making these strange loud and consistant popping noises(from the speakers). It comes from the speakers\headphones respectively. It doesn't matter if the volume is up or down the noise just keeps up(really loud too).

It seems as if it only starts after the machine heats up.
It does it even before boot if the machine is heated up.
When the cdrom drive spins up it stops.
When i play games it stops.(cdrom is not running when i play games though)
For everything else including listening to music, surfing the web whatever, it just keeps pop, pop, popping away.

Did a complete format and reinstall awhile back and still the same.
I am completely stumped.
Any clues?

Try uninstalling reinstalling sound on the lappy. Make sure you have the latest drivers/dx/chipset drivers and see if there are any patches on the hp website for this prob

That type of sound suggests an electronic component problem - possible a capacitor discharging suddenly. And it seems to be linked to the CD ROM drive. If that drive is modular, remove it and thensee if the popping persists or goes away. If it does, replace the drive.

Try disabling the sound card in BIOS. If this makes the sound go away, you know its pretty narrowed down to the board in there. If it continues, it could be some sort of interference or transistor. Let us know after disabling the sound card in BIOS.

My el'cheapo compaq bios won't let me have that kind of access to the hardware. Good idea though. I'll look around for a bios utility or possibly onother bios revision that has more hardware access.

Howdy,
I've seen some other compaq's that have this issue, personally, I fixed it for the gf's mother in law by taking the laptop apart and cleaning everything out. I figure it must have been a static or ground problem. Not too sure. So if you feel ok taking a laptop apart, go for it, but be warned it isn't the easiest thing to do. ALOT harder then ur desktop.
