My dad have a Belkin wireless router (upstairs) that I wanted to hook up my computer (basement) to. To be secure, I decided to use a ethernet cable instead of wireless. Now here is the weird part. My computer does not get a connection using the cable. XP cannot get an IP address from the router, even after a clean reformat or using other ethernet cards. However, my laptop can, and I can surf on it. Even stranger, another laptop that I use upstairs (with a ethernet cable) cannot get an IP address down here. And even stranger, my second computer gets an IP address down here but gets crazy packet loss (so no surfing).
I tried turning DHCP off and assigning IPs manually, but then I just get packet loss. I have tested the cable with a tester and it came out fine. I have switched ethernet ports on the router but the same happens. I have no idea wtf is going on and any help will be greatly appreciated.
