Hi,

I need some help. Building new computer for a brother in-law. Got a full win98se install, directx7a, Agp (via), vid driver. Everything smooth so far. Add modem, sound, and NIC. Nic is only installed temporarily to use my dsl to update before giving it to him. Anyhow, surfing speed seems ok. However, whenever I try to download, I get a few k then it stops. Happens in WindowsUpdate, Symantec Live update. Again, surfing seems ok...maybe a little slow. Swapped NIC with known good one, used known good connection (one I'm using), direct into DSL modem, same symptom. PC seems to work fine with this exception. Tried only vid card and NIC, same result. WTF All I want to do is make sure everything is current before I let him have it (Win98, MSOffice, etc).

I just build another last week and had no problems. So I'm really stumped. Config below. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Enlight Mid Tower w/ 250w Supply
MSI K7TPro (6330)
Duron Boxed 700
128Mb Corsair Value {PC133)
Fujitsu 13Gb ATA66
3Com 56k PCI non-winmodem(latest driver)
LinkSys 100TX(latest driver)
Asus V-7100 Geforce 2MX 16Mb(latest driver)
Hitachi DVD-Rom
Onboard sound
Only using AGP driver (most current)

Can't think of anything else relevant.

are all drivers updated and you put in all the right protocols? hmmm, try using the modem, updating windows and then go back to using the NIC perhaps win needs to be updated and will resolver your prob.

Modem connection allowed me to use windows update for critical updates. NIC method still no go. I'd hate to have to upgrade IE over a modem

Didn't see anything about protocol settings.

I assume yer using TCP/IP and DHCP for IP And WINS? What does your DSL provider recommend and allow?

Correct. TCP/IP and DHCP for IP And WINS when using LinkSys DSL/Router and static IP when direct connect. Set up exactly the same as my working PC. Same network settings, same model NIC, same Win98SE. That's what really has me scratching my head.

You have a NIC/Network problem. I have seen this before. Remove your *.pwl files in the c:\windows folder. Remove all network protocols and adapters in the network settings. Reboot machine and load just the NIC adapter and TCP/IP. Reboot machine and load your IP settings for the adapter. You will also probably have to enter a new password - leave blank usually. After the next reboot you should be able to browse normally.

Thanks Motorheader,

Your proceedure fixed the error trying to access another computer. I still have a problem accessing the officeupdate site. When selecting the SR1 Autoupdate, it loads the program to check which updates I need and hangs. I have to Ctl-alt-del to kill IE 5.01. Other than that problem, your fix appears to fix. Thanks

Officeupdate - SR1 for Office2k to be exact - is a nightmare. I have had it completely ruin an otherwise stable system. It is not completely necessary to have this, but you may want to try to download the updater files then install them locally. One of the Win98se updates you should be getting are the critical updates from microsoft - about a 2 meg download and install. Tools, windows update on the taskbar. After the reboot, you should then try to download the office2k installer/updater - instmsi.exe - run this executable, reboot, then try running the SR1 update from the officeupdate sight. Also make sure you have the CD-Rom in the drive for the disc you are doing the update for. LMK and good luck.
