Strange network behavior

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 (all recent updates) and a Linksys WRT54G router. I have my desktop pc wired into this router. My home network has a cable modem to a router in gateway mode, and my router is plugged into that gateway in router mode. On my router I have my desktop PC (wired) and my laptop (wireless-G).

Here is my problem, everything works fine, but when I run BitTorrent app (BitComent) or Emule (usually both). After a short time I get 0receive and 0send, in fact I can't even open a web page. I unplug the router for 5 seconds, plug it back in... and everything is working fine again... until after a short time I get 0receive and 0send again. This only happens when I run BT app etc, and unplugging my router for 5seconds fixes this behavior. What is the problem here? Is there a easy solution that does not include stopping the usage of BT etc.
