strange netwok behavior

this is really wierd....

I have two computers, both connected to my 10/100 home lan and directly connected via gigabit (cat6). previously, I had drives on my fileserver mapped to my workstation, and all was fine. then it came time for the fileserver's scheduled reinstall (both comps run xp pro), and suddenly things get wierd. first I couldn't map the drives (via the direct connection or lan). Now, I can map the drives, but files won't open or transfer. Windows taskbar alternates between displaying "local area connection 2 connected" and local area connection 2 disconnected" every few seconds if I try to drag and drop or open any files. also things freeze up, explorer (or mediaplayer or whatever) crashes, and I have to restart my workstation. all drivers look fine, my firewall is set up the same as before, I'm really confused.

This is anoying as hell, does anyone have any ideas?

My ideas would be to start by checking the cables. Then making sure the NICs were seated well. Then, if needed, try different NICs alltogether. Maybe in different slots.

yeah, I thought about it being the cable...but it's just wierd that it just started going funky after a new windows install on the fileserver...both nics are onboard, but I do have a gigabit PCI card I can play around with. will try that later today. Thanks for the input.
