We are doing an OS upgrade on 8 computers here at the office. We are currently using Epox motherboards (8KTA+) with a Duron 650 with a single 128 meg stick of memory. Upgrading from 98SE to XP. I went ahead and ordered 4 sticks of memory (256 meg) to replace in half the machines and was going to roll the old sticks of memory into the other machines. These machines had no problems on 98.
When I started the installs, I noticed that some of the machines would have lockups during various installs (NAV, Wordperfect, transferring files from old hard drive to new one). I have since tracked this problem done to only happening on systems with 2 sticks of memory. If I take and put a single stick of 256 in, the problems all go away. 2 identical sticks of 128 cause a problem. The 128 sticks all came stock with the computers and are all identical (in fact they still have the original serial number sticker that the computer store put on them and have even had consecutive numbers - strickly by accident and not intentional on my part).
My question: is there a known problem with the KT133 chipset and filling two slots of memory? Or did I just get plain unlucky?
To add to this (maybe I'm just cursed) I had been having random lockups on my home system (maybe twice a week) with XP. Just on a whim, I swapped out the memory for a single stick and I have not had a problem for the last two weeks. This is with an ABIT board with the same chipset.
