strange issue with audio in my htpc

So my setup is my gaming pc connected through hdmi from the Nvidia GTX 670 video card to my Denon 2113 AVR and then through to my Samsung Plasma TV. I was playing Shadows of Mordor last night and noticed that despite setting 5.1 in the game and in my windows audio settings, I was only getting stereo sound, as my AVR was reporting.

So I went into my audio settings to do a speaker test and true enough, all my outputs are playing through my front speakers only. Left-front and left-side play through my left front speakers; right-front, right-side and center play through my right-front speaker. My sub seems to be fine.

Now heres the strange part. I put in the bluray for The Hobbit and it was outputting 7.1 DTS-HD and I could hear sound coming from all 5 speakers. So its working fine in movies.

Also this is something I just noticed, when I go to the hdcp status in nvidia control panel; I see an alert that a repeater is connected to my system and some applications may not work properly in this case. I dont think I had this alert earlier.

So can someone tell me whats going on? And why this started happening?

Sounds like a software issue, dig deeper into the settings. I use TMT and it overrides that ever I do in the speaker settings and uses 5.1, so I am guessing that your BRD player might be going the same. Your speaker settings may not be set up properly so you get stereo but BRD player overrides and sends the correct signal.

There are generally two audio setting software, one windows and one the device manufacturer's, in your case nvidia, did you check on both?

I dont see any nvidia specific settings in the control panel. All I have is a link to open the windows audio settings. When I do the speaker test, it plays everything through the front speakers no matter what configuration I set to.

I also play BRD through TMT6, and it outputs correctly. Same with netflix and VLC player.

Managed to fix it by try a different input hdmi port on my AVR, which is strange because it seemed like the problem was at the pc, not the AVR. Now I have a wiiu plugged into the "bad" port and sure enough its only sending stereo sound out.

Is there some sort of pass-through filter setting on the AVR?

What is Windows set to for audio? I have an issue where my audio always gets "downgraded" from Multi-channel PCM to Stereo whenever I turn off the TV and receiver. If I right-click on the sound icon in the system tray, go to Playback Devices, and hit Configure, I will see that I'm set to Stereo instead of 5.1. However, similar to what you're seeing, bitstreaming audio works fine... well, until I get the no-sound bug. :p (Flippin' buggy Haswell NUCs....)
