Strange internet problem

A few days ago I posted about my internet cutting in and out while on AIM on both my computers. I think i've narrowed it down to it being a router issue. Here is what I've done so far:

When my computer is off, the other one can stay on AIM for hours and hours. When I bypass the router and hook the modem directly into my computer it works fine. After I bypassed the router and went back to the normal setup the connection seemed fine for a few days but then went back to only being able to stay online for around 10 minutes.

This is what I did today. I have onboard LAN on my Abit AN8 Ultra, I disabled it in windows device manager and in the BIOS, installed my NIC card and installed the drivers, well that didn't work either. I don't know what else to try, There isn't a firmwear upgrade for the router. Any assistance would be greatly apprecitaed.

do a continous ping to the router IP address (your default gateway) to see if you lose connectivity to the router when AIM drops. If it DOES, you have some sort of problem (this isn't wireless, is it?)

if it works, do the same to the Default Gateway of the router (or the DNS servers, something co-located with your ISP) and see how that corrosponds to the dropped AIM connection. Should narrow it down some.

I am not a big maven in AIM, but if AIM needs specific ports to be open, the same ports cannot be opened through the Router for two computers. Specific port can be opened only to one specific computer (IP) otherwise the Routing get confused.

Yeah, I was thinking of that myself. But this setup has worked fine for over a year and then it just started cutting in and out. My girlfriends computer just lost connection since her AIM dicoed, I pinged both my routers IP and Gateway and while pinging the gateway took a few MS longer there was no packet loss. Not sure what this means if anything
