Strange High Pitched Noise From Monitor....ideas?

Hey Everyone,

I've got a Samsung 900IFT...and lately it makes a super high pitched noise that comes and goes...it'll go away if I tap the side of the monitor lightly.

This seems very very bad...anyone know what's going on? Is it just a fluke thing or is this baby dying?

Thanks,
AJ

My TV, also made by Samsung, started doing the same thing a while back. It turns out that the transformer/power supply was going out, and the interference in the circuits was causing the whining. If your monitor is still under warranty, I'd take it in and get it checked before it dies on you...

Change your refresh rate. It worked for me. My CTX did the same thing since I bought it. I don't think it is dying. My CTX did that for 1.5 years before I sold it.

most monitors if you get close enough you can hear that noise. But if you can from a distance, then it may have to do with your refresh rate

My Komodo monitor dosen't make a sound. It gets real warm though, so my cat likes to sleep on it 🙂

i had some generic 17 inch monitor that did that, i found if u tap it, or put some wieght on it, it stopped, like i put a book on it and the noise stopped...heh weird

I had a refurbished 19" monitor w/30 day warranty and started doing that right before the tube blew up on the 29th day.

Check the power cable in the back. Wiggle it around and see if that changes the sound or makes it go away entirely. I have a similar problem on an old 15" (it's an NEC though -- great monitor), and a monitor tech told me a couple years back that it's related to a capacitor or something or rather and is NOT a threatening problem.

However, if yours is under warranty (mine isn't), you should probably have it replaced because it might be something else. My monitor has worked for three years with that problem, and it doesn't affect the image at all. I can stop the noise by jamming a credit card (or similar card) above the power cable where it plugs into the monitor so it locks the cable in place.

Troble is, your hearing is to good. You need to find someone with say a 44Magnum, go out and stand beside him, without hearing protection, while he fires off 30 or 40 rounds. Might want to trade sides mid way.

This is quanenteed to quite down your monitor.

Mine was the same way!

My old Sony 15" had the same problem and after i moved it to an older computer using a matrox millenium 2MB @ 800x600, i didn't hear anymore high pitched noises.

my kds does that sometimes, but at really high res only (1600x1200) which is what i run it at. it only happens if the resolution is switching occassionally , maybe once a week. doesnt seem to do anything bad.

I have a similar thing going, but mine seems much weirder. The noise doesn't seem as if it's coming from the monitor itself, but I can't pinpoint it...

Anyway, what's weird is that it seems as if it's how things on and around my desk (monitor, case, speakers, TV, VCR playstation, N64) are arranged that does it. Like I'll hear it, and all I have to do to stop it is move one or two of the things and it stops...like turn my monitor or TV slightly or move one speaker back a bit. It's really strange.

I have a ADI and it was doing the samething and noise would go away if I punch on the monitor hehe so I check my display setting in the control panel and found out the adapter was set to default which didnt really tell me what frequency its was using so I change it to 85 and noise never came back again.

Yes,

Lower your refresh rate. We had a problem with a monitor in the Bank where I worked. We changed the refresh rate and the high pitched sound went away.

But think about the tremendous costs for the new PA he'll need for his computer...

Anyway my Monitor (see below) also sounds strange from time to time. Sometimes during bootup-resolution, sometimes running windows. But too unfrequently for a real error 😕
If I have enough I fire it back to LGE (thanks for 48month 24h replacement guarantee...😀)

i am suspecting you might be 'overclocking' your monitor (in terms of refresh rates). sometime ago i read this might end up in a big mess of a CRT explosion 😱

LOL @ rossgr. That was funny man.

Chiwawa626 and mwink. I have the same deal with my Compaq monitor, only during startup though, all you have to do is push on the top of the bezel and it shuts up. I can't explain it and I am a monitor tech at work. Haven't got the slightest idea. My boss seems to think its a cap but there is no way I am going to hunt down some stupid cap just to get rid of that noise during start-up.

Actually, I had my computer set up with the problem monitor, and my father was visiting. We were talking about the computer, and I said something about the awfully high pitched whine that was coming from my monitor. My Dad said, "What noise?" He was about 62 at that point so it makes sense since you lose your upper register hearing as you age. It was somewhat weird though since it was loud and clear to me.

I had an old 26" TV that was working quite normally and that gave off quite a lot of high frequency noise. But you get desensitised to it. These noises should be 10KHz, maximum 15KHz, so most people should still hear them until they are decrepit.
