Strange GTX570 SLI failure - 2 cards die simultaneously - Crysis3?

Looks like something caused it to burst in flames i.e. the de-colouration of the PCB.. That looks nasty indeed although I doubt solder would melt, only at points where the damage probably caused shorts.

Was the video card overclocked? It maybe the PSU. OCP may not have triggered because it could've been a voltage problem i.e. high spikes or reverse polarity etc which video cards normally lack (correct me if I'm wrong).

What were the temps of the card and how long was it overclocked for + power rating of the PSU including model would be helpful to diagnose the problem.

Damn, I've only seen that happen once before, the solder melting is indicative of a massive card failure. There are hardware safeguards on most video cards to prevent that from happening and those seem to be defective. Now for what actually got the card to that point, that is another story, PSU, motherboard, who knows, you will have to do some tests.

My brother's rig just died. Both GTX 570 cards died completely, 24 hours after installing crysis3.

He sent the following pic, which is apparently representative of both cards. I've never seen anything like this before.

Any ideas what could have caused this? This doesn't look like overheating to me, maybe some sort of corrosion, but the comp is in a closed case, with filter mesh over all openings.
.....

Nvidia had one bad driver some years back which could cause their cards to overheat.
Then again Crytek did say that Crysis would melt your pc.
