Strange explorer behaviour

Mmmmm. . . Explorer (the desktop not Internet) has started to do something very odd on my wifes PC. She's got a fairly standard setup with Win 2000 Pro on. All has been fine for quite some time, but suddenly, when you right click an icon (real or link) I see a message saying that Explorer has generated an error and needs to close. OK'ing this causes Explorer to close and restart - but with only a limited set of system tray items.

Any ideas anyone?? It's driving me nuts - and it's not every icon - some work just fine, but others give a problem - I've not been able to establish any kind of common ground between those that do and those that don't. Seems random.

Thanks in advance, regards, Chris B

Run anti-virus and anti-spyware, and run MSCONFIG to remove as many unnecessary entries as possible from your statup sequence (look up entries you don't reconize on google) . If it still happens after that, you may just have some general OS corruption and need to do a repair install on W2K.

Good luck.

Or, after you have done what colkurtz suggests with ADAWARE/SPYBOT and your antivirus [maybe AVGFREE] - all in safe mode after updating them in full mode,
run from commandprompt
sfc /scannow
if needed
