Strange DNS server behaviour

Hi,

Here's what happened. I have DNS setup on my W2k Server and sharing internet through NAT. Last night when I try to access the internet through one of the workstation it couldn't get anywhere. The demand-dial seemed to be still working fine as the RRAS machine dialed out when I access the internet from the workstation but just after it dialed I get nothing. The server can access the net ok.

I tried for an hour or so figuring what's gone wrong since it was working perfectly the night before and have been working fine for over 1 year now.

Finally I was looking at the DNS server settings and I have enabled the "do no use recursive" setting and everything worked perfectly. I know what recursive / itirative resolution means (even tho I may not know how to spell them correctly 🙂)

My question is WHY would it suddenly require checking that box??? It didn't require it just the night before and now it requires it?? The ONLY think I have done was to update to the latest 12.41 official detonator drivers. Which I would think have absolutely nothing to do with this.

Any possiable explaination would be nice.

Yer haven't seen you around in a while Shadow. Well thanx for your help again seemed you are the only one around here who could help me ^^ I took a look that the KB article. It didn't make much sense tho. Since it say to enable "forwarders" which will cause the internal DNS to perform an recursive query to and external DNS server. But I had to tick the "do not use recursive query" box to make it work. Hm... anyway... at least things are working now. Even tho I don't know why ^^
 
You said you are using NAT, on a Win2k Server right? Does the NAT=ICS? If so, you don't need to run DNS or DHCP. The ICS installs the components it needs, adding a caching only DNS..At least that is what it is supposed to do.
 
No Agamar. Nat is not ICS. While some people think that MS NAT is screwed up, It worked fine when I was using it.
 
The reason why you want to enable Forwarders is so that your DNS queries are made to proper DNS servers and that the queries are timely. Always enable DNS Forwarding on your Primary DNS servers. This will help out sooo much with External DNS queries.

Also, just an FYI. When you install Active Directory and have DCPROMO install/configure DNS locally, you might find that in DNS there is a "." zone. Delete it. This is not needed on your DNS server. I believe that this has been corrected in SP2.
 
Yer forwarders have always been enabled. Shadow you have probably forgotten that you are the one who told me to delete that "." and enable forwarders in the DNS server instead of allocating the ISP's DNS server from DHCP.

 
No. I do remember. I just stated it for others so they know what to do. Thanks for your reminder though. 🙂
