I've just inherited what seems to be a very unusual problem with my cable modem. The modem is a 3Com CMX. It frequently loses its connection with the cable company's (AT&T/M1) headend, causing a complete loss of all connectivity. The strange part is that it seems to depend upon what I'm doing at the time. For example, I can reproduce the problem 100% of the time by simply connecting to the local newsserver and attempting to grab certain messages. Almost immediately -- boom, the cable modem goes nuts and dies. It does happen sometimes when grabbing email, but news/NNTP is by far the quickest way to reproduce the problem.
I'm guessing that the modem has developed some serious problems, but still thought I'd mention the problem here in case anyone has any other suggestions. I doubt that the cable company "tech" will have the slightest clue when he/she shows up a few days from now.
At least general web browsing works, and doesn't seem to cause the modem to go into a seizure and puke...
