strange burner problems

I have had some trouble recently with my burner,

It will not detect any media when I use a burning program. Both Nero and EZCD ask say the drive is empty.

so i try to read a regular CD from it and it wont work. I open the drive in explorer and it has nothing listed. Even if i have nothing in the drive it opens and shows blank contents, rather than asking to insert a CD. pretty confused.

I tried updating the firmware and that didnt work. I also tried using a dvd-burner and the same problem arose.

im pretty baffled with this one.

Specs:
Abit Kt7E
amd athlon 1200
512 ram
2 HD (system drive 20Gb NTFS, Data Drive 40Gb Fat32)
Khypermedia 52X24X52 seamless link burner
generic 10x DVD player

just check that the jumper is set correctly - not to cable select, if the other drive on the channel is not CS.

have you managed to try the cd in another system?

the drive is set to master and the other on the same channel is set to slave. I will see what happens if i leave that drive as master and take the other of the channal.

I have no other means of testing this drive, I am at school and all my roomates have laptops.

since had the problem with another drive I figured something was wrong with my sytem.

I will update asap

I tried to use the burner with it alone on the channel set as the master drive and it failed to change anything.

the problem was unaffected.

the strangest part of this is when Ihave no disk in and i try open the drive under My Computer>E: it opens to a blank screen; rather than give me the error message "please insert a disk into drive E:"

Try deleting the ide controler for the optical drives in device manager and then rebooting.

I have tried all that has been suggested and i have also tried hooking up the drive via a pci IDE car and the same problem persists.
