I recently built a new computer and naturally decided to run some benchmarks on it. Since I'm operating on a limited bandwidth connection (Wireless T1+ speeds, but only 5gb/month) I didn't want to get the 200+ mb '03 or '05 editions, so I got '01. I ran the test and ended up with a score of around 5500... which is wierd considering my system specs:

Athlon 64 2800+
512mb PC3200 (Mushkin)
Chaintech VNF3-250
Maxtor 160gb SATA
FX5500 (128mb)

I've got the latest drivers from nVidia, no overclocking has been done, and from what I've got, I *should* be getting much higher. A friend of mine with lesser system specs (2800+ Mobile XP, 712mb pc2700 ram, GeForce 4 Ti 4200 (128mb), nForce 2 mobo [not sure what model exactly]) gets much higher results.
Any suggestions/thoughts on what's going on?

[EDIT] I'm running the tests at 1024x768x32 with AA turned off, double frame buffering, compressed texture formatting, 24-bit z-buffer depth, and pure hardware T&L

hrrrm you should be getting about 10k with that or more perhaps, even though 5500 totally blows. (a 3.2p4 with fx5500 gets 9.3k according to some benchies i just read)... have you installed all the motherboard's chipset drivers, along with the AGP drivers?

The only drivers I *DIDN'T* install were the ones that came with the gfx card itself... I just went straight to nVidia and got their latests Detonator drivers. I'll check again tho to make sure that they're all installed.

It does seem a bit low but the 5500 is a HORRIBLE card. It is a waste of Silicon. Why on earth did you get it?

What chipset drivers are you using?

Got it because I was looking for a cheap card that would still do *some* stuff... Didn't know what else to go with and it was sorta a rushed thing, so I hadn't done any research into other cards around the same price to find out what else would be good. As for chipset drivers... For the motherboard I'm using the nVidia nf3 drivers, for the card I'm using the detonator drivers...

detonator drivers? u mean forceware right?

if they are called detonator then im sure they are old, detonator is from the GF4 days, nvidia drivers are now called Forceware.

AF? Pardon my ignorance..... I don't know what that stands for off the top of my head (Antialising I'm guessing? If so, then yes, I ran it without that enabled)

And yeah, my bad. Last time I had a decent gfx card (I've been living off an ancient ATI Rage Pro 8mb PCI card), they were called the Detonator drivers. I meant ForceWear ^.^

Ok the Ti4200 is a MUCH better card than the 5500.

Secondly AF is Anisotropic Filtering, AA is Anti Aliasing.

Third it is Forceware, not Forcewear.

so its on a par with a GF3 Ti200...i would save money and buy a second hand ti500, which would evidently hammer this FX5500.

in this rig, AXP2000 (palomino) 512mb DDR266, MSI KT333Ultra 2, 2x40gig HDD i score nearly 8K in 3d mark 01.

What I quickly found out about the fx5500 is that it scores almost the same as my fx5200 (128bit)! :confused:

3dmark 2001

fx5500 = 7795
fx5200 = 7656

3dmark 2003

fx5500 = 1555
fx5200 = 1423

quake 3 arena

fx5500 = 154
fx5200 = 159

Hmm... ok. I will see what I can do about RMAing it and getting it replaced. Still tho, I've got a (somewhat) better system than nemesismk2, and he's getting 2k+ points higher than me... that's what confuses me. Any suggestions for a good card in the $50-$70 range?

I don't understand. You build an athlon 64 system and you put an FX 5500 in it? Look at my system specs and you will see (I think) that yours are much better because of the athlon 64 but the 5500 is really killing it. Though because mine has a higher FSB and clock with more ram I could be wrong about yours being faster. Either way, side the point you should put a much better video card in there and return that god awful card!

You have a MUCH better system than my old xp2500 system and the reason your scores are low is because the 5500 is holding you back badly. With my Sempron3100 system (similar spec to your system)which was equipped with a Radeon 9700 Pro I was getting a score of 16100 with 3dmark 2001!

How about getting a Radeon 9700 Pro for only $81! :)
