Wow, I think it's time to buy a shovel for my car :Q

I've been meaning to put together an emergency kit to keep in my trunk... things like road flares (useful for if you have an accident or need to start a fire), a whistle (for signalling), a flashlight w/ extra batteries, some bandages, ponchos, etc. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I think I better get it done before winter. 😉

You don't need all of that in our kneck of the woods!

No, but if I travel far enough away from home I do. 🙂 The road flares, flashlight(s) and ponchos are what I REALLY want in it, but if I'm going to put an ammo box in the trunk I might as well fill it. We were in an accident last year in a heavy downpour on a highway, that's what prompted the idea.

Flares are fun. I picked up some emergency flares at the Knob Creek Maching Gun Shoot last year (unlike road flares, emergency flares burn REALLY bright and hot for about 30 seconds).

I picked up a nice roadside kit from Walmart awhile back for $29. Has tons of stuff, flashlight, tow rope, etc. Pretty nice, plus has velcro strips on the bottom of the bag for sticking to the carpet in the trunk.

I've heard of people carrying around kitty litter in place of sand for when they get stuck, worth getting any? Seems like it would have a nicer pour container than just a plastic bag of sand 😀

YES! Kitty litter is WAY worth it over sand. It's helped my parents out of numerous sitations.

Who needs a roadside kit when you have a Surefire and a pocket knife in your glove compartment. 😉

Living in arizona, I have no clue what snow looks like. The forecast high is 88 today, with thunderstorms forecast in the evening. High temperature yesterday was 87 I believe, and partly cloudy, a very nice day indeed.

Thats not true, it snows in flagstaff.

It just doesn't snow in your particular area of Arizona.

are you home? if so, you are lucky to have electric. I got no electric in my place. DAMN. right now, I am in the school library.

we still don't have power back home. i've been making trips to niagara falls, st. catharines and welland just to get away from hell. there's no power (won't be for 4 days they say), one tim horton's open, one gas station...

that reminds me of the blizzard during the day before thanksgiving in 2001. i was supposed to drive home to nyc after my last class (SUNY Buffalo). but since i saw the snow coming i decided i should skip the class and start driving home. the snow didnt start until 1pm. by 3pm there was 6inches and 4pm there was almost a foot. i left around 4 and made it 5 miles onto the 290. got stuck in traffic for 6 hours and slept in the car the entire time. around 9, i had to pee really bad and found a niagara casino cup in the back seat. i didnt realize how much piss i had in me and i filled it to the rim and nearly spilt the entire thing in my car. around 10 i decided to call it a night and i was fortunate that i was near an exit the entire time. i drove home in the 3 feet of snow that fell and left early next morning. what an adventure!!!

Should have made use of that urine stream.

REGGAE4K OWNZ J00!!!!
Or something like that.

So you're in Buffalo, and they weren't ready for 8 inches of snow? Isn't that the city where 3 feet of snow only causes 2 hour delays for school?
I'm at college in Erie, and 8" is generally considered really irritating, but it doesn't seem to paralyze the city.
I guess they just weren't ready for so much snow in the middle of October.

wow, thanks for sharing the pics. glad you survived being stranded. personally, i couldn't live in a snowstorm-prone area.

I got off the thruways before it got REALLY bad.

Currently I have no power, no hot water, no heat and 2 feet of water in my basement.
