All I can come up with is that he would do this because of a dying family member.

his dog dies, and he uses it as an excuse, and then puts off going back (back story of stress and spinelessness)
there's been weird phenomena going on in his hometown, his job is related, so he goes home to investigate

Just remember:
Garden State -> Great (although 'death in the family' isn't a very original setup)
Elizabethtown -> Not good (although it had a better setup with the billion dollar fiasco)

Great, believable characters and dialogue make up for cliched setup.
