Stores that Let You Borrow ODB Code Reader

I got a check engine light on my dad's car. I want to check the code before I bring it in, but AutoZone doesn't let customers borrow the code reader anymore.

Are there any autoparts store that will let you borrow the code reader?

Autozone did have it in the loan a toal program. Try another store.


But why not just drive it to Advance/AZ?

Just buy one for ~ $40 from Harbor Freight when it is on sale (happens every 3-4 weeks). Mine reads everything, plus you can clear the codes with it (it helps troubleshoot).

HF is crazy, crazy cheap. That is a nice price.

Advance here will still check a code.

WTF. Is that for real--why has CA banned it? It cannot really be because mechanics are complaining that people will no longer pay $90 to use their tool for 3 minutes is it? I mean really, I need to know for sure, what is the real reason behind that law?

EDIT: I think it may be because people clear codes for emissions. However, if they are smart enough to do that they are smart enough to know that they can pay $90 or less for a scanner, so still it's cheaper than a repair, if they're trying to pass an annual inspection or something.

My auto zone stopped doing it too. upsetting. I ended up buying one for like 60. I dont think Kragen or Pep Boys does it either.

I suggest getting the model up from that one, should be about $70. Gives you a definition of what the codes are without having to look it up in a book or on your computer.
