Stores asking for additional ID when using CC... I thought it wasn't allowed.

It seems that there are a lot of stores asking for ID when using a CC. It's really annoying that I've been refused service because I wouldn't show them. I was under the assumption that they were not allowed to do that.

I'm looking at MasterCards Merchant agreement (I use a MasterCard) and it states:

A merchant must not refuse to complete a MasterCard card transaction solely
because a cardholder who has complied with the conditions for presentment
of a card at the POI refuses to provide additional identification information,
except as specifically permitted or required by the Standards. A merchant may
require additional identification from the cardholder if the information is
required to complete the transaction, such as for shipping purposes. A
merchant in a country or region that supports use of the MasterCard Address
Verification Service (AVS) may require the cardholder?s ZIP or postal code to
complete a cardholder-activated terminal (CAT) transaction, or the cardholder?s
address and ZIP or postal code to complete a mail order, phone order, or
e-commerce transaction.

I thought I remembered seeing that you were supposed to report this to the company that issued your CC, but I called CapitalOne today and the lady I spoke to had no idea what I was talking about. She got the manager of the call center on the line and not only did he have no idea what I was talking about, he said merchants were encouraged to ask for ID.

So what's the deal?

I've never heard of that, and like the employee/manager, I'd always thought merchants were supposed to check ID when using a credit card. I know I always feel better when they do.

I actually THANK the checkout person when they ask me for identification. I look at it this way......how bad would it suck, if someone got ahold of your credit card, and was going around town on a shopping spree, and no one ever asked them to verify they were you?? Oh yeah, most of them don't, do they??

Far as I'm concerned, it should be required. No id, no sale, period.

It's against the terms of service, but I doubt many people call up the CC company to complain

when a CC does a chargeback on unauthorized sales, its the merchants that get shafted most of the time. so don't blame the stores, blame the people who try to buy with stolen credit cards. if i were the clerk and i asked for you ID and you said no, i'd throw that card in your face and say no ID no sale.

Why not just show them your ID and be done with it? These threads seem to show up on ATOT occasionally and I just don't understand the logic of some people. Do you enjoy making a scene/being a pain in the ass or what?

It is rare for me to asked for some ID but I thought is was within the rights of the merchant. I think it is a good way to reduce the chance of cc fraud.

I work in retail, and am one of those people who asks to see an ID when handed any debit or credit card. If someone runs their card as debit and enters their pin, we don't need to see ID..
And technically, if a credit or debit card is signed on the back, we are not required to check ID, though I do anyways because anybody can scribble.

But then again, I've always been under the impression that making sure people weren't using stolen cards was a *good* thing.

While I support asking for ID with a credit card transaction, (I think it's for MY protection as well as the store's) it IS against the Terms of Service with both MasterCard and Visa...however, I don't know what Visa or M/C would actually do in such a situation. I suppose they COULD withdraw the store's ability to accept such cards, but that would cost the card company as well...

And who pays for cc fraud? Everyone in higher prices.

Let me guess... you also think that government handouts are "free", right?

My dad worked for Visa for 15+ years. He would get annoyed anytime someone asked for ID when he used a credit card. He actually knew specifically where in the merchant contract it said that possesion of the card was itself ID.
