Store owner who "Pitied" robber busted selling...

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (WPIX) - After the word got out of his act of compassion and kindness, deli owner Mohammad Sohail became an instant star.

That unusual confrontation caught by surveillance cameras shows the shop owner being held up by a masked man armed with a baseball bat. Sohail pulled a rifle on the robber, who then begged for forgiveness, claiming to be hungry and down on his luck.

Sohail gave him $40, and even offered him bread and milk.

However on Thursday, the kind-hearted store owner is facing up to $30,000 in fines.

"I respect the fact that he did something courageous on one occasion, nonetheless I'm convinced he was violating general business law," said Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota.

The District attorney and a host of elected officials boasting the results of an undercover sting that snagged 7 shops for drug paraphernalia. Sohail's store was one them.

"Everybody sells these things." said Sohail.

Some of the items seized like gravity knives that were on display are illegal, but the weapons didn't come from Sohail's store, these hookah's and pipes did. When it comes to smoking pipes, the law gets a little cloudy.

"It's not illegal to sell it, but it's illegal to sell it when you know what you're selling it for," said Legislator Kate Browning.

That includes selling to teens, or to someone whose intentions are clearly not for tobacco use, but to get high.

Sohail doesn't face any criminal charges, just hefty civil charges for business law violations. The shop owner is not as concerned about the money as he is about his reputation.

"They try to make me a hero, I don't want to be a zero," he told PIX News.

WTF?

I didn't think hookahs and pipes would be considered "drug paraphernalia". The overwhelming usage of hookah/shisha is harmless.

Exactly. It's kinda hard to prove his intent to sell here.

I once went to a little indian shop with some friends, and the shop was selling hookahs. One of my friends commented "lol its a bong" and suddenly the shop owner appeared and kicked us out because if there is any indication whatsoever that the hookahs were going to be used for pot his store could get shut down.

As far as I'm concerned he doesn't have to ask anybody anything. You assume it's going to be used for legal purposes. You can stab someone with a mechanical pencil. Should everybody be asked what they're going to use their new pencil for?

Most head shops have signs posted that say that their products are meant for tobacco only and that any mention of drugs will result in you being kicked out of the store.

Yea, I bought some Lysol air freshener at the store yesterday. They didn't ask if I was going to sniff it. I wonder how much of a case they actually have on him.

Meh, stuff like that is sold all over the place. Local skate shops and CD stores can be pot head heaven as long as nothing is advertised as such.

I don't buy into drug laws, but it's fucking hilarious at those that have posted they smoke non-tobacco products trying to claim it's just for legal purposes.

I have *never* smoked a hookah, but I know more people who smoke legal flavored tobacco from them than I do people who smoke pot from them.

I actually don't know anyone who smokes pot with a hookah. Smoking tobacco through them is actually quite nice.
