1. Should I buy a 256GB Crucial MX100, or a 250GB Samsung 840 EVO?

2. How long will a Western Digital 1TB Hard Drive last? Do you reccomdne getting the 1TB Black for $80, or the Blue for $60?

3. Does Lite-On make good Optical Drives? I am looking at the Lite-On iHAS124-14.
 
I would say of the two SSD's the Samsung has better reliability based on reviews, YMMV

Definitely the WD Black. How long will it last? Under optimal conditions and treatment, you should get 4 -7 years of service.

I've had good success with Lite-On optical drives.
 
I would root for Crucial, I am not a fan of Samsung, despite the reviews, my personal experience has been better with Crucial in terms if both reliability and performance. Again, its my personal opinion.

What are you going to use the HDD for? if its just for storage, you might want to look at Green too, they should technically last longer, they turn themselves off pretty quickly if not used. Black vs Blue, is more about performance, black dives are supposed to have better performance, AND they are more reliable too. iirc, black has two more year of warranty, 3 vs 5, so I guess Back is better. However, they are twice as expensive as green, so if you are going to use for media storage and things like that, then green might be a good option.

Lite-Ons are pretty good drive, never had bad luck with them, however, I personally like ASUS better, they seem to be more smoother imho...
 
Liteon are amazing, never had a problem with neither their SSDs (yes they produce SSDs for OEM which are a rebadged plextor basically) nor their optical drives. They were the first along with Plextor 13 years ago to introduce the 16X CD Writers back then

for SSDs, I only swear by Samsung SSDs for 2 things:

1) their reliability

2) they are the only SSD Manufacturer that gives you amazing tools to play with your SSD.

Samsung Magician allows you to check your drive health, monitor its status, apply OS optimization tweaks with one click which would take you so much time and hassle if you were to do them manually, it has RAPID mode which will use 1 GB of your RAM for caching to improve performance, and it allows you to easily OP the drive (over-provision)

Look at my sig, I have 1 mSATA 840 EVO and two 840 EVO 2.5' drives for a total of 3TB which I put in RAID 0

A gaming + program drive. The other games and programs will be on the SSD.

I would just buy whatever 1TB 7200RPM HDD is on sale... the Blues have been pretty inexpensive, but so have the Seagate Barracudas. There is also Toshiba. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of those.

Personally, I would get the Crucial MX100.

And the Toshiba drives are actually Hitachi...
