I sure never would have thought of this one!
Easy way to unlock car with keys inside.

This only applies to cars that can be unlocked by remote button. Should you
lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are home. If some one has
access to the spare remote have them telephone you on your cell phone. Hold
your (or anyone's) cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the
other person press the unlock button, hold it near the phone. Your car will
unlock. I tried it and it works. Saves someone from having to drive your
keys to you. Distance is no object

Automotive remote locking setups use radio frequency. Television and stereo remotes use infa-red light. So no, it would not work.

It would also not work to simply use a radio frequency generator because the keyless entry fobs send an encoded stream over that frequency, so the car is "listening" for its own unique code on that frexuency, not just any old code on that frequency.

The dealer has to do it. You can't buy a universal replacement and make it work for your car.

That's for stock systems. Aftermarket systems use the same operating principles, but I'm not sure where you'd have to go to get a new remote programmed. Probably would have to call the company that made the unit, give them the serial number, and have them ship you the new remote.

That's not true, you just have to know how the dealer does it. For my '96 Cobra, you have to do something like turn the key on and off ten times in rapid succession, and then you have like one minute to activate each keyless entry remote that you want the car to respond to. I forget the exact procedure, but I bought a replacement remote keyless entry fob and was able to program it myself once I found the directions.

Some (older) keyless entry systems CAN be unlocked with a universal programmable remote.

I know some models of mercedes used an infrared sensor, as well as some jeeps. You could point the remote at a learning remote control, learn the code, then open the doors with it.

I actually *did* try this, I believe it was on my parents mid 90s mercedes. Somehow I think they were trying to claim that the IR remote was a "safety" feature in that you'd never accidentally unlock / lock your car when your keys were in your pocket etc.
