Pleasanton is about to turn the fast into the furious.

In a move unprecedented in the Bay Area, the city's traffic engineers have created a traffic signal with attitude. It senses when a speeder is approaching and metes out swift punishment.

It doesn't write a ticket. It immediately turns from green to yellow to red.

so if one guys is speeding he'll turn the light red for everybody else on the road. :|

I swear. People are going to start running lights left and right in that town.

That town will become to stoplights what Saint Louis is to stop signs.

I think the article is misleading, it probably changes to yellow (normal yellow duration) and then changes to red.

Even still, it will cause more people to run the light if it is right there and they are going that fast.

I don't think it will cause any danger (sensor is 350 ft. from intersection, any decent driver should be able to react accordingly to a yellow), but how much is this sh!t gonna cost?

And of course, the legitimate drivers behind will get stuck, while the red-lighter goes full throttle through the intersection. So now instead of the guy doing 45 through the intersection, he's doing 90. Lawyers must be having a party today to celebrate new founded income.

assuming the duration of the yellow light is 3 seconds (could be more), and the sensor is set to detect speeders 350 feet away, all you have to do is go at 80mph to beat the red light!! Speeders rejoice!

I don't have anything against Cali, but from what I hear its a real mess. Maybe that vault that lines the boarder of Cailfornia won't be such a disaster when it finally breaks off and sends the disorderly mass of land into the ocean :p

A 5 second yellow will let you speed at 48mph and still make it to the intersection before the red.

Redo your calculations and figure this into the equation, entering an intersection after the light has turned yellow is the same violation as if it were red.

no way. if i'm one foot away from the intersection travelling at 40mph, and it turns yellow, I didn't do anything wrong.

Anyway, the calculations were just for fun anyway and completely inaccurate because we don't know exactly how the sensors work or the exact distances.
