Stop Signs

My rant for today is stop signs.

I find it disgusting how the lights here in Toronto are and the amount of stop signs and other annoying things that just slow down your day driving and make your car take a toll mechanically.

First, none of the lights here in Toronto are synchronized. I think lights everywhere else in the world are synchronized that if you get a green, you will most likely still have a green at the next intersection, and the next, and the next....here it's like, green, red, green, red...terrible, I think I run 10-15 yellows a day and Im not even joking.

Stop signs, everywhere, terrible, all way stops, people not knowing what to do when they approach them, they just sit there like fvcking ducks waiting for something to happen instead of going when it is their turn. I hate it, I feel like Im superior or something and everyone else is a peon just floating along on the road.

Then we got the new speed reduction bumps the city is installing literally in every residential neighbourhood. Every 50 meters or so is a huge massive bump, not like a speed bump, but more massive, and basically if your doing over 30 km and go over it, your owned. Crazy.

So me, I run mad yellows, I roll almost all stop signs, I make left turns even when the green advance light is gone, just to get through my day. Anyone else notice that they just do too many of these things each day driving to be considered normal?

I don't mind stop signs as much as I will just go if no-one is moving, I wont wait to see what other people are going to do. The lights, on the other hand, can be a major pain if you aren't in the right groove. I find that I have to race from a red light to get through to the next green light without getting stopped again. Once I fly through that second light I am usually caught up on the timing and can have green for many lights. If I just drive normally, I will get red at every light.

 to the Xkcd :)

Wouldn't ducks just fly? Why would they stop for a stop sign?

It's because of drivers like you that they have to put up speed bumps and so many lights.

"Fvcking" ducks would probably prefer to stay grounded. Sex in the air is harder than it looks.

i think some eagles and some hawks do it in mid air
i saw something on discovery channel about it

Among the most spectacular sights North American bird enthusiasts can see is a mating flight of White-throated Swifts. A group may come swooping down a canyon at high speed, shortly after dawn, with pairs tumbling together as they copulate in midair.

Quite interesting, but I guess the real question is if they're African ducks or European ducks... but then again African ducks are nonmigratory.

QFT. OP, you seem to operating from the POV that car travel, especially when you're driving, should be priority #1. Step back from that and maybe you won't get as annoyed? Fast car travel doesn't have to be and shouldn't be the top priority everywhere. That being said, I agree with you about morons who stupidly cede the right of way.

On the other side of things, I read somewhere (ATOT?) about a city in Europe where there are no stoplights, stop signs, crosswalks, etc. It "works". Wish I had a link for you.

I think you're wrong about lights being synchronized everywhere. If they synchronized it in one direction, it'd most likely not be synchronized in the other direction. Nowadays most lights around here have sensors to detect when cars are lined up on the cross street and changes the light when appropriate. That makes syncing lights even more unrealistic.

I'm guessing the speed humps are so people won't use residential roads as thoroughfares. I'm guessing that's what you're doing, because as a superior driver you can't be bothered with main roads.

Speed bumps are put into the residential areas to reduce the street racing. I know on my road its a perfect quarter mile from the lights to the stop sign, with only 1 minor intersection between it all.

Maybe in that spot, but in general it's called "traffic calming" and is indeed used to discourage through-traffic.
