When I highlight a message I have gotten, it automatically opens the message up. Can I make it so that I have to double-click on the message to open it up? I have OE 6.

You could get rid of the preview pane altogether.

View menu > Layout > uncheck "Show preview pane"

After that you double click on messages which will open them in their own window. Not quite as convenient, but it'll do what you asked.

what i'm trying to prevent is a script from running if i click on an email i suspect is a virus and want to delete it. will hiding the preview plane accomplish that?

You should just disable the preview pane then. If it is a virus, you're likely to get infected by just previewing it, and not even "double clicking" and opening the email.

If you have preview disabled, you can right click, select properties, and usually gather enough information as to whether you want to open a suspect email or not.
If you don't, as soon as the message is highlighted, it's opened, per say, and alot of the newer worms can infect your system at this point. Why take the risk?
