Hi,
I think that of late some of the posts round here have been racist towards some countries/members of other countries (France and Germany spring to mind). I would like to know if people agree that arguements should be kept civil and that this kind of "bashing" should stop. It doesn't prove anybody's point.
I would also be interested to hear the opinions (I have had to edit here to say "opinions" not "insults") of any one (French or German in particular) about how they feel towards these forums, and if that has changed of late.
Thanks,
Andy
It's been pointed out a million times already that your use of "racism" is incorrect, but I wholeheartedly agree on your call to "civility". Unfortunetly, some people don't have the self-control to do this and due to the structure of ATOT it is next to impossible to get a "civil" discussion on sensitive issues here.
If you really want "civil" discussion on such topics, the Soap Box at Ars Technica comes pretty close. There the mods step in and try to keep topics ontrack and they will lock/ban those who don't contribute to the discussion at hand. Unfortunetly(why I don't post there anymore 🙁 ), you have to have a Subscription.
Speech is not nearly as free on Ars Technica soap box. The mods here are much more restained.
This is just my observation anyway.
Speech perhaps, but Discussion is emphasized. Free speech has it's limitations, especially the "speech" that many resort to. Stroking of one's ego or the attempted destruction of another's is not what the Author's of the Bill of Rights had in mind when they gauranteed Freedom of Speech, they were thinking about "discussion" of ideas in order to benefit society as a whole.
IMHO, the explicit right of free speech only works if it protects even the most offensive and vile among us AS WELL AS everyone else.
I agree, those who post inane crap have the right to do so. What I'm saying is that posting inane crap has no value or redeeming quality. Those who post inane crap, then wrap themselves in the mantra of "Freedom of Speech" are insulting and belittling the value that the Authors of the Bill of Rights had in mind. This is where Self Control comes into play, if you value your rights, treat them with respect, not as an excuse.
