A guy that I know from the college here is having a problem of getting a stop error upon bootup and has a lot of important academic documents on the HD. Would a repair allow me to temporarily fix it until I can perform a clean install after getting his documents? Thanks for reading and thinking....

Never had any luck with repairing Windows. Hook it up as a slave to another pc and pull the info you need off. Stop errors can occur for many different reasons.

it depends on the stop error, UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE can sometimes be fixed with the recovery console's CHKDSK /r command. and others can be fixed with repair installs, my sister in laws computer has been running for 6 months after getting UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and i ran CHKDSK /r on it, depends on the specific problem, but it cant hurt, note: be prepared to wait at LEAST 20 minutes for the chkdsk to complete

hope it helps
