You will notice several editting errors in the letters themself since the paper sucks. Mainly gigabite and megabite, but there are a few more.

lets just say purdue != CWRU. no where NEAR the budget of CWRU, FAR more students, and campus is HUGE compared to CWRU.

and 1GB bandwidth a day? hell i can d/l stuff and stay under 1GB if im smart!

So you get a gig a day. That's plenty IMHO. Especially for a couple bucks a month.

You want more...move off campus and pay $55 a month for an unmetered account. It's as simple as that.

The kid should be happy they allow 1gb per day of download. They used to start throttling at 250mb.

I guess someone needs more movies but claims "oh I'm downloading linux isos!." How often do you need to download an iso... every day!?

It's funny how he claims he is downloading linux isos yet everyone of them is available on campus ftp sites and those transfers do not count towards your 1gb per day.

I remember reading his letter and being absolutely floored by the stupidity. His biggest complaint shouldn't be about the LAN, he should be more worried about adding another T3 or starting to upgrade to OC-3s (which I think has been a long time in coming). The university has no need for GbE; even the most complex of networked computer games will run easily on 10Mb. I'm sure the next day he went out and complained about all of the extra spending that is raising his tuition.

edit: I forgot to mention that Purdue doesn't block any P2P applications. I'd like to see what would happen to this guy's bandwidth usage if they did that.

I go to Illinois State University. I'm an RCC on campus, ResNet Computer Consultant... it doesn't mean much but yeah, I deal with ResNet. Our ResNet is 10Mbps up/down, and there's no official cap. Last month I transferred 50GB total up and down combined, and nobody said a word to me (network admins, etc). Our ResNet costs $60/semester.

Point in case, just because you go to a great school doesn't mean your Internet feed is going to rock. Good schools normally hire great network admins, which care about the network, and like to let the network's utilization be no where near 3/4, where packet loss starts to become a small problem. Instead you you have a OC3/DS3 or the like, sitting there relatively unused because they'll use a packet shaper and prioritize p2p apps extremely low.

and its 60$ a year for resnet.

The guy gets broadband access at speeds most homeowners would kill for... for basically FREE ($50 a YEAR is free, dammit).

Yet he whines about a perfectly acceptable limit... what more he whines because he can't steal copyrighted material at a rate he's accustomed to.

That's sad.. we have a 110Mbps frac oc3 at ISU, and I'd imagine Purdue is much much bigger.

Not for our ResNet at ISU. Don't tell me I don't know something about ResNet, it's meh job. All school's networks differ. And you are wrong, he could NOT get >30GB per month because of the 1GB/day limit...

Last I saw, there was no restriction one which line a computer would use. Granted my info is a little old since they took down some information that they used to have up. Regardless, they still have a gigabit link to I2 which should take care of all of his needs for ISO's and the like. At blazing speed no less.

also, the setup is from what ive been told, is split up. the dorms get T3, everything else gets their own setup. so its fairly balanced load.

and, if i wanted to, i could say your setup is sad, cuz compared to CWRU, you guys have NOTHING. CWRU is loaded in the network department

One thing Gatech does right. I've gotten sustained 8MB/s(yes, megaBYTE) transfers. Thats rediculous. I've downloaded over 5Gb a day for a week when I first got here, not a word has been said to me. The only thing they truly restrict is uploads to the outside, which are capped at ~56KB/s.

Purdue uses 2.5 T3s for a total of 112.5Mbps. The I2 link helps get rid of some of the stress though.

One other point to mention is that in a lot of cases, linux ISOs are hosted by universities themselves, so he would most likely be downloading such an ISO off his LAN rather than over an expensive WAN link.

One T3 (or OC3) is about 45Mbps
