Hey guys, so I'm pretty sure I have the stomach flu. I felt queasy last night but decided to sleep it off and hope for the best in the morning. 5 am I woke up and since then I've had all these symptoms:

http://www.sylvanfamilyhealth.com/stomachflu.htm

I am too lazy to go see my doctor because he's in the city and it's Friday...plus I don't know if I can make it there without incident.

Any good remedies you guys have to beat this thing?

There's no such thing as a stomach flu. You'll have a standard gastroenteritis. The doctor won't be able to do much - he may give you some pain/fever meds and tell you to take a few days off and drink tons of fluids.

Why would you see a doctor?

If you keel over in writhing pain due to your stomach, falling down the stairs in the process, then it's time to see a doctor.

Unless you love taking meds for no reason whatsoever?

It's an infection inside the digestive track that creates flu-like symptoms. Most people know there is no such thing as influenza of the stomach. :p

Yea, from what I've read the doctor doesn't really help much...so far I'm just drinking water and some peppermint tea...

Usually you just have to wait it out, BUT if you are throwing up too much (or having too much come out the other end) and can't even keep fluids down, you may need to pay a visit to the ER or risk becoming dangerously dehydrated. They can give you an IV for hydration and possibly an antiemetic to control vomiting.

When I had C Difficile I was told to drink gatorade, maybe it will help for the stomac flu as well? Do you throw up anything you try to eat?

Good point actually - you should be drinking things with electrolytes - gatorade and other sports drinks are best.

Yea...what he said lol :) I guess "stomach-flu" is a mere nickname...

I can pretty much say though without going into any disgusting details that this is by far the messiest/dirtiest sickness I've had to date :S

I also suspect a mofo at infected me with it. He was off for 3 days but came back to work and said he still feels sick, he had the stomach flu...

Yeah that and just watch the ability to keep fluids down in general.

If liquid is coming out both ends constantly, maybe all 3 ends, pay very close attention.

If you stop sweating, get yourself to urgent care or the emergency room stat.

Yea I'm going to pick some of these up in a bit. I haven't eaten anything since it started.

Last night though, I came back from the gym and had a chocolate protein shake :S Yea................ :S I don't think I'm ever drinking another protein shake in my life ever again.

You must try to stay hydrated as mentioned. And google the BRAT diet, it works wonders.

If you can't drink without vomiting it right back up then try munching on ice chips. The slow trickle will allow your body to not want to reject it.

Above all stay hydrated or you'll only make it worse.

The word stomac flu is basically like swine flu. It's not the proper name but it's accepted. the stomac flu has a name similar to H1N1 but it's different numbers. (who makes these up anyway? lol)

I've read some swine flu symptoms but the stomach flu ones agree more, and I don't have any of the severe swine ones like trouble breathing...

However, people at my work place have had swine flu, and a few students too, working in a school ftl :(

That's not really true - stomach flu is just a vague name given to a massive variety of illnesses, many of which aren't even viral. Your "similar name" comment makes no sense - I'm guessing you're not entirely clear on what H1N1 actually means.

Yeah. Popsicles work great. And yes, stay hydrated, although personally, I preferred dry heaves, but you do need to try to get something so that you don't get dehyrdrated. If you live alone, make sure someone knows what's up, in the case that you are dehydrated they can get you help.

I used to get this once a year when I was in grade school all the way up to high school. I'd get over it within a single day, but man, it sucked. I basically would just lay and puke and sleep and puke, and try to eat, and puke, and sleep.

And yes, this could be any number of illnesses. I always called it stomach flu because that's what the adults called it, but now know it could be food poisoning or any number of other things.

Take a pain killer, drink lots. Ginger ale (must have actual ginger in it, ie Canada Dry) or a ginger tea will help with the nausea. If you can't hold food down, at least try dry toast.

The important think is to keep drinking. Keep warm and rested. Fortunately for you, it's the weekend so you can rest without getting bothered.

I'm just saying, m ost people refer to the proper flu name (which I forget, it looks like H1N1) as Stomac Flu. The same way people refer to H1N1 as Swine flu. Swine flu is not really the proper term either but it's accepted.

Everything that was already said plus weed for comfort. It'll help with the nausea and you'll care just a little less that you're sick. Might even make you want to eat.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I must say that I am feeling MUCH better than I did this morning and during the day. I still have diarrhea but I am not throwing up anymore. I went to the pharmacy and got myself some pepto, 3 vita-water's with potassium, and some magnesium/potasium pills.

My mom's cooking me chicken soup with rice and carrots...

I weighed myself just 5 minutes ago and since the morning I've lost 10 pounds. Not a bad diet :)

Those things where you put in the water and they fizzle and you then you drink it, those always work for me.
