What about the gps info in the pics?
What about them?

What about his name and contact info on the back?
Did he have that? The clip I watched didn't mention it (unless I missed it). Anyway, a thief selling the iPad would certainly remove that first.

A $50 ipad is stolen.
Did she pay $50 for it?

A $50 ipad with the owner's ID and contact info scratched out is stolen.
Totally agree. Do you know if the owner info was etched into the chassis?

She's apparently in Phoenix, so they will find her.

I have no doubt she will tell a story to explain why she isn't a thief.
I believe she is a thief. If she is, I hope there is unquestionable proof.

The number of people claiming the iPad hasn't been stolen is disheartening.
Who claimed it wasn't stolen? It's possible that she didn't steal it. Not likely, but possible. It's almost a 100% certainty that someone did steal it.

Even if not theft, you still got possession of stolen property. And that has a considerably lower burden of proof.

Did you say it wasn't stolen? Did you say any of the things I posted about?

Yes, I know the owner's info was etched on it because I read more than one account.

Etching the name and contact info on the iPad is a strong sign that the owner has not abandoned it, and would like it returned.
The underlying policy goals to these distinctions are to (hopefully) see that the property is returned to its true original owner, or "title owner." Most jurisdictions have now enacted statutes requiring that the finder of lost property turn it in to the proper authorities; if the true owner does not arrive to claim the property within a certain period of time, the property is returned to the finder as his own, or is disposed of.[5] In Britain, many public businesses have a lost property desk, which in the United States would be called a lost and found.

His name and contact info are etched on the back of it, so it would have been easy.

And what if she bought it was a person claiming to be that guy? I bought an Engraved iPod Touch off Craigslist, maybe I should have asked the guy who sold it to me if I could see his ID so I could match it with the name on the back?

When the airlines compensate you for lost luggage you sign a form which says you've sold the luggage to the airline, they then sell pallets of it to Unclaimed Baggage Center.
The TV show bait car shows the cops leaving cars parked with the keys in them. If somebody takes the car the cops track it,turn it off and lock it by remote control, and arrest the occupants for car theft.

I sure would have tried to check before buying it.

That's what I was implying with my post, but I got an infraction point. Pfft.

If you notice the pic, they have one loaf of bread. Whereas the pic on the right, shows a guy with a huge bag , so was he lucky and found a big bag of goodies ?

The thing to remember is that Rakehellion doesn't believe in the Golden Rule. If I left my iPad with identifiable information and he found it, he would feel no remorse about keeping it.

If the tables were turned and Rakehellion accidentally left his iPad somewhere, and I found it, I would make every effort to identify the owner and return it to him. I would have no expectation of reward or payment. I only hope that someone else would do the same for me.

In the Middle East, they decapitate thieves. In the US, we used to lynch them, but now they're trying to abolish capital punishment state by state.

Good to know, as I have an interview in Houston next month for a position with Saudi Aramco.

Surprised that no one has dropped a dime on her yet.

I'm not surprised some people think of it as "finder's keepers," but I am disgusted that I have to share the oxygen on this planet with them. Just the other day, my wife and I were shopping & after paying with a debit card, the cashier handed us back $10. But, we didn't ask for cash back. Unfortunately, we had clicked on "email my receipt," so there wasn't a record right there for us. We told her, and went to the service desk, told them what happened, and gave our name & phone number, in case the drawer was $10 short. On the way out, we were behind an elderly gentleman. While he was fumbling with his receipt and change while walking, he dropped a bunch of money on the ground. Oblivious, he walked on. I picked it up, ran to catch up to him, and gave him the money he dropped.

There's at least one individual in this thread that I think would consider both situations as "score!" If you don't know the difference between right and wrong, you're pathetic. If your parents didn't teach you the difference between right and wrong, your parents suck.

"No Country For Old Men" provides a salutary lesson in the perils of following a policy of 'finders keepers'.

I thought they just cut off one of their hands each time they got caught.

If you leave your car on the side of the road and someone takes it, that's theft. Leave your iPad on an airplane, that's abandoned.

She disabled find my iPad. The owner could have reclaimed his property and is currently trying to do so. If I were him I would check with the airport, she probably works on the cleaning crew or some other support role.
