Stock: Ebay - crazy high

this was just in the WSJ. Apparently they are forcasting 494 MILLION people to be registered by 2010, with 200 million being active. I'm going to go out on a limb and say they are overvalued and their potential growth is way over inflated.

400,000,000 is nothing if you consider the world populations, its overwhelming popularity, and their advertising campaign ongoing for the next 6 years.

I don't know if you can say they are overvalued. It seems all the overvalued stocks were already brought down to a more sensible value when the bubble burst. The fact that Ebay is flying so high in this economy says something.

Their value is that high as they turn a profit and have very low cost

Who needs 'em. Never used them. Never have, never will. I used to use Yahoo auctions until they started charging. It was fun.

edit and they have a great business model too, right ?

The scammers on ebay will get you if you're not careful. Basically---if you want to sell something I'll buy---you have to have at least 100 feedbacks. I dont' care if youre' selling a new laptop for $25 and there's only one bid....sorry.

But aside from their sh!tty way IMO of troubleshooting the scammers---I got burned on a refrub monitor for $300 once--their business model is rock solid. Not only do you get hcarged a listing fee---but you get charged a % of the sale. And no matter how many clones came into the market...even in the www BOOM----no one came close to the ubiquity of EBAY. Their technology is solid---and they're smart. They should be a case study for everyone wasnting to get into ECommerce. At least financially.

Too bad amazon wasn't able to captitize on their popularity and make a competitor to them w/ their online auctions......

we shall see. Their forecasting is way overinflated, though. You have to agree on that. Ebay is trading at 70 times its earnings estimate. Too high, IMHO.

I don't follow their finances much, all I know is my uncle works for them and he's been doing real well the past year or so with his ISOs.

i used to think ebay sucked (based on opinions coming from here), but so far i've had no trouble in buying 2 ipods, a set of computer speakers, and a menagerie of blankets that my mom bought. not to mention getting excellent prices!

why the strong decision?

Too easy to get ripped off. I prefer buying things in person anyways.

I've made 50+ purchases on ebay, and haven't had a single person ripped me off. Infact, i don't know of a single person (in RL) that has been ripped off on ebay... and i'm sure with their combine purchases, that equals a thousand easily.

Might have something to with their decision to stay and expand in the silicon valley, and we all know how affordable it is here in the valley ... go ebay!

I've been using Ebay since 1998 and I have NEVER had a problem. If people would just use common sense when buying/selling, ebay would be a lot safer place 😉

Your loss. I've used eBay for the past 5 years. 158-0-0.

Nothing but good transactions.
