Stock E2160 faster than FX55 in gaming?

THG CPU charts are no help, they don't include the FX55 so I don't know where else to turn than the AT community. Thanks

Will be fairly equal in non-MP games. But the future is multi-core, so the 2160 will do much better on newer games, including Quake4 (patched to support MP), SupCom, etc. It also overclocks to the point of X6800 performance pretty reliably.

My guess was that in most (single threaded) games the FX55 would be faster. To whatever extent, I don't know.

Any charts out there? I have an old FX55 rig but thought about this new E2160. I'd OC it to 3ghz (maybe) but I don't really game.

But probably won't do the upgrade if the 2160 gets pummelled by the FX55 stock to stock in gaming. Just getting old and lazy.

Obsolete :D

The FX55 is 2.6Ghz stock, which puts it in the same territory as an E4400 in single-threaded apps (C2D > A64 @ 20-25% per clock/per core advantage). The E2160 1.8Ghz should be nearly equal to the FX55 in single-threaded games.

Check this :

It's foreign, but you can see a single-core AMD64 @ 2.8ghz getting demolished by the E2160 even at 2.4Ghz.

Yeah, after looking at those charts.. it looks like they'd be roughly even stock to stock as you say.

Amazing how things progress. Pretty amazing how a E2160 can indeed match a FX55 to me. Even though the FX55 is ancient.

I might be moving to the E2160.
Thing is I just sold my 8800GTX I bought on launch day for a number of reasons (mainly disuse) and ordered a fanless MSI 8600GTS.

I only really want to play some occasional CS/CSS/Dark Messiah.. maybe a few other games but not much, and only at 1680x1050 with no AA/AF. Medium details or whatever it defaults on.

I just don't care to keep elite stuff anymore when PC games are designed for P4 + 6600GT's practically. Then to get crackling audio in some game after spending thousands (in Bioshock recently for me), or some other PITA issue that I no longer care to hunt down and fix.

I now believe in Cheap Thrill PC gaming (midrange), and the Xbox 360 EVERYONE I know seems to have so I'll be picking up one of those too.

Hmm w/8600GTS, you might stick with that FX for a bit longer, as you'll probably be gpu bottlenecked anyways. Prices will just get better, and if you build in January, you might be able to run a Penryn quad entry-level for $200ish.

I like your idea best. Prices aren't going higher, and when I can get a quadcore setup for $200 I'd probably spring for that. Only thing is right now, RAM prices are as attractive as I can ever remember. They seem to jump all over the place.

The only other thing I need to probably to is replace my CPU cooler (Arctic Cooling Freezer64), it makes a weird wobbling whine on startup. And I think I'd like to switch my Antec 900 case for a Antec Solo.

Something a little more low-key (quiet) for my new, and likely permanent PC gaming philosophy. Not that the 900 is a loud case, it's quieter than my old Super Lanboy.

Obsoleet, welcome to the forums.

Have you considered doing an RMA for the Arctic Cooling Freezer64? I believe AC has a warranty that is several years long. As for your Antec 900, start by switching out all the 120mm fans with undervolted Yate Loons if you're still using the stock Antec fans, then undervolting (or unplugging) the top rear big fan.

ok, I'm going to go for "quiet operation" now that I've benchmarked cat 7.8 vs 7.9 in 3dmark06. hmmm, I wonder how quiet I can get it...

Part of my desire to leave the 900 is the dust that collects on the grills.
The lowkey look of the Solo will fit in with my changing living situation for years to come.

It makes me sad to realize that (apparantly) I'm getting old and un-elite.. but I'm losing the fire and building a new C2D rig wouldn't give me the same excitement the same process has for 15 years now. :(

The only reason I really thought about moving to any C2-based CPU is because my mobo has a chipset fan on it and if I can make an inexpensive move, I can eliminate that fan without having to take it off and replace it with a heftier (silent) heatsink.

The 900 is a great case, but it doesn't fit my lame GPU and CPU anymore. The dust is only a minor issue really but still something I could do without.
A silent PC is something I've wanted for a long time, or near silent (CPU fan only, case fans and PSU fan only). I have a silent GPU now, and the Corsair HX520 which is pretty quiet.
The 900 is more quiet than most people would assume, one of the quietest cases I've ever had.

Thank you for the welcome, reading this site and searching its forums for info has always been a pleasurable/productive experience for me.
I searched on here for info on the MSI fanless 8600GTS before I ordered for example, usually some forum member here has experience with a given piece of hardware here.

I'll look into a possible RMA.
