im going to be buying an e6600 and mildly overclocking it. would anyone reccomend staying with intels stock heatsink, or should i just not even bother with it and go for a zalman or scythe?

edit: this is going to be on the evga 680i mobo

Get rid of it if overclocking.

You are getting too many good parts to waste time with that stock heatsink.

if its a reference 680i board, like the evga, the back plate needs modding (dremeling/filing) on almost all zalman coolers. see here for some evga discussion

edit- i am running the stock cooler and it basically sux 😛 i'm probably going to put in my zalman as well if i can't find another low profile sink.

There are so many good heatpipe coolers out there -- ThermalRight, Zalman et al -- since you've invested in recent technology, you're going to over-clock, you've bought good parts -- dump the stock HSF and spend $40 or $50 for a low-noise, minimum thermally resistant heatpipe cooler.

The CNPS9500 is really the successor to the 7700. Both are excellent heatsinks, it's just that the 9500 uses heatpipes to get the heat out into the fins, instead of simple conduction as in the 7700.

If you're in the northern hemisphere, it's winter time. The stock cooler will work fine!

However, come summer, you'll be over here asking what's wrong with your machine -- why it's running hot. That's when you'll need something better!

Since you're buying a Lian Li case, these guys will probably talk you into a Freezer too.

So, spend the $15.00 now, for your dream HSF, or spend it later. Up to you... 😉
