Stock Android Keyboard now in Play Store

very good news for all android users. What's left to decouple? Stock Launcher, People/Dialer, Camera? SMS but i'm hoping they plan on integrating SMS/MMS/GVoice into Hangouts.

Photosphere pretty please?

I realize that I'm in the minority but I really don't want them integrating SMS/MMS into Hangouts. It does look like they will eventually do it so if they did, at least I'm hoping they let me turn it off completely.

I really don't want to chat with someone and accidentally send and receive messages through as text messages (which I'm paying per use, not to mention that most of the contacts I often chat with are international numbers).

If they implement, i doubt they'll let you disable. It's been 2 years since i was on iOS, i think it's more of the same, send through iMessage and if the other person isn't on iOS, SMS.

Camera/PhotoSphere, i bet is next on the list to decouple.

Totally agree on the bold.

Use Google Voice, then it's free. 😛

Maybe it'll only integrate if you use Google Voice.

Does this have an option for a dedicated number row? I've grown attached to the num row on my S4.

Yea this is what I want. I ended up going to Kii Keyboard which is very similar to the stock Android one and has the top number row. I wish autocorrect worked in the stock Samsung keyboard because I really like it.

Kii keyboard is just like stock with more customization. It's what Google should've done in the first place--offer us more options. Instead they sit on their butts and churn out a minor update each year. We still have terrible prediction and the auto correct is still atrocious.

I am using Google Voice. It's the international text part that's going to be a huge problem.

Google Voice until now officially still has no support for international texting. What is happening right now if you send an sms to international number, it is up in the air whether your text will get delivered, or if it did, whether the reply will get to you.

I've tested this extensively with my friends from around the world (at least 20 numbers from at least four different countries. The result is, there is no consistency. It's not guaranteed that the sms will be blocked (sometimes it does), but it will also sometimes get delivered. And this happens both ways. It's pretty much about fifty2 chance whether you can actually have an international sms conversation through GV.

This depends not only on the country, but also specific carriers within that country. Different carriers may give you different results.

Now, can you imagine how big of a mess this is if I am in the middle of conversation with someone and then lost data connection intermittently (let's say I'm on the bus/subway) and whenever it does it defaults to SMS? If everything is pure data (like Hangouts is now, and other programs like Whatsapp, etc). Then it's clear that my message wouldn't get through if there's no data, and then it will get delivered as soon as I get data connection again. Simple.

Additionally, GV also doesn't yet officially support MMS, which creates another complexity to the whole thing.

The browser. I HATE Samsungs. Its like the Fisher Price browser (no background tabs).

Chrome is already available as a play store download.

Perhaps it'd be nice to default to Hangouts data messaging, and if it needs to fall back to SMS it can alert you? I dunno.

I'm fine as long as there's an option for it not to use SMS. If its going to use SMS without notifying and getting permission on a per message basis then I won't be using it.

I use Google Voice currently to do all my texting and it does not ever use any of my limited number of SMS messages per month. It all goes through data, and it simply won't go if data isn't there. With that in mind, I don't see why Hangouts would suddenly change that.

Agreed, and I use it 99% of the time because we don't have an option for the AOSP browser.

I thought chrome was now the ASOP browser?

Edit: and Samsung's browser does have an open in background option. Its in the settings>advanced bit.

Definitely a nice option, and free, but I'd use either SwiftKey or Swype over stock...but hey, it's better than the one included with Sense.

I can't find that option on the S4 in Int. or Att based ROMs.

Menu>Settings >advanced on the S3 and S2

Has anyone worked out what finger voodoo is required to input double letters, i.e 'too'? It's possible because I've done it, just not exactly sure how.

It's not as consistent as I would like, but the way I get it to work is by moving my finger up and down on the letter O. It works better in Swype keyboard from what I've experienced.

so Google starts decoupling things... this means they become closed source on the play store, whereas before it was open sourced bundled with the OS. I guess we were moving there slowly anyway with the gesture typing being proprietary and photosphere proprietary as well.

just my pessimistic view though.

Um, I'm pretty sure the Play Store (and other Google Apps) are the few things that aren't open source.
