The size of the protest movement is not necessarily indicative of its merit. If I remember correctly, there were huge protests against the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ" yet I also remember the fact that nearly all of the people protesting the movie never even saw it. The KKK probably has a fair number of members even today -- does that make them correct?
It makes perfect sense that there is a large movement in California, all the way across the country from Philadelphia, where the Hollywood stars and other self-proclaimed crusaders have taken up the white-guilt case of Abu-Jamal. There's enough synchophants who will follow what celebrities say that if a movie star jumps on the bandwagon, many will join. Anything which goes against the establishment is the rule of the day at Berkeley -- no surprise there.
Moonbeam: You overlook another factor in weighing the jury decisions in both cases. In each, the unpopular opinion is the contrary view -- "support" of the Aryan Nation (when it is freedom of speech and tort abuse in actuality) and the current f*** the police attitude which prevails in many segments of the population lately. My best friend was a cop for awhile, and my coworker's brother was almost killed yesterday on duty so I do not share that second attitude. In fairness, "cut and dry" was an overstated description.
I'll do some research into the facts of this case and post what I find (not relying on biased websites!).
