If the only reason you would marry your GF is over $400, then it may be time for a new GF.

I think giving me back more on my paycheck would encourage my spending. This is why. When I'm given a big tax check back (like a rebate or refund) I put it in savings or some long term interest gathering account (IRA, CD, etc). I dont' go buy a tv. However, if I was given back an extra 10 or 20.00 a month. I'd probably eat out more, or buy more toys while I'm out and about. I wouldn't think about it as being a 'lot of money'.

Credit. Isn't that what's gotten us into the is mess? People couldn't afford the credit lines they had. Now you want them to get more and larger credit?

Only three Republican Senators (Specter, Snow, and Collins) crossed over to vote in favor during the cloture vote but even Specter seems like he's wavering now. If just one more vote is lost, this atrocity of a 'stimulus bill' won't pass.

Call the Senate Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or Collins (202) 224-2523, Snowe (202) 224-5344, Specter (202) 224-4254. Full list of Senators and their phone numbers.

This porkulus bill will literally send us off the cliff

I'm almost 100% sure that our Senators want change their minds. One will easily vote for it, and one will easily vote against it.

If that chart is accurate all I can say is ouch...

Only if not getting a lump sum bothers you so much. I think this is better than lump sum, because people just blew their stimulus checks and bought stuff that was mostly made in China junk that didn't help our economy all that much, since we are still in this mess.
This will pay my cell phone bill, for example.

It would make more sense if they let everyone keep their entire paycheck for 1 month - tax free.

How is your wallet doing?

And how is that bad for the economy?

Fortunately my wife doesn't make jack squat, so she offsets my income and we still fall under lots of those household income limits. ;)

My money went into the stock market. So, how did I put people to work? Spending on infrastructure gives people jobs. Time and time again, trickle down economics has proven a failure (you listening Republicans?) and trickle up in fact does work as you will see in the next 6 months (typically the democratic stance)

Why did your brother loose [sic] his home? Bought too big a house? Liar loan? How is that the fault of Republicans? Maybe he should learn to be responsible.

Then thank goodness that the government is going to hold onto your money for you and only dole it out in small portions that you can responsibly handle.

Are you joking? The majority of Americans are NOT financially responsible. We are still cleaning up the mess from the droves of Americans who thought it was smart to take interest-only loans and 0% down loans when they couldn't even afford the monthly payment. If there were another lump-sum stimiulus, half of the people would be buying TV's and PS3s with it, and the other half would stuff it in a bank account, not exactly the kind of economic stimulation we need. If it's portioned out over time, the money is more likely to get spread around (spent on a larger variety of items) and less likely to get socked away in a bank account.

QTF. I remember one day last month I had $300 extra in my pocket from a full days work, something that's rare for me (I work for myself...) I was at Best Buy and had to fight with all my nerve to keep from buying a $200 USB microphone. Something I guess I want, but definitely don't need. I left without buying shit, but when I get extra cash it seems the first thing I do is go to any store that's close and see what I could buy lol.

If I was given $6400 all at once I am sure I would buy something that costs 90% of that. and in a few weeks I'd be back to being broke. As sad as this sounds, there are many Americans who are far worse than me. Giving large lump sums to people would end badly for the country, most would have some cool new LCD TV or something useless and be right back in debt in a week or 2.

It's hilarious because they're trying to fix a problem, caused by excessive borrowing and spending, by telling them to go spend more .

We have to face the reality that many people have spent more than they should've have, and there'll be a period now, where people have to work their asses off to pay off their debt.

The government handing out checks to people just passes the problem off to our children.

I'm willing to go out on a limb here and predict that four years from now:
- the national debt will be higher than it is now
- executive pay will be higher than it is now

Who's fault will that be?

This question might be too far off the topic of this thread, but if you buy your shares from another investor, as opposed to newly-issued stock from the company, how does the company benefit? It doesn't seem like they would realize any money from investors trading their stock after it's already been sold the first time.

This whole think fucking stinks. House members weren't allowed time to read it all before a vote. Expect to see a whole bunch of shit (pork) in it.

And the senate is flying in a senate member from his mothers wake to make a vote tonight. Something like 1400 pages and 8 inches thick.

Rule #1 - do it on a friday night so the public doesn't notice.

Like they are capable of understanding it if they did read it. We get the government we deserve and when Congress goes into an election with a favorable rating of 19% and over 90% of them are re-elected then who is really to blame?

Bush, it would take Jesus himself longer than 4 years to make a noticeable change. BO isn't Jesus and cannot perform miracles. I would be surprised if he would be able to lower the debt within 4 years. But than again nobody could. What he's doing today though will lead to the debt being cut, just not in 4 years or even 8 if he gets re-elected. He took the worst possible job in the country and the worst possible time. I don't think executive pay will be higher either.

They need to have a cost of living index applied to the income limitations.

70k ain't shit in coastal cities and is pretty much middle class, yet gets shafted on this stimulus bill that is suppose to help the middle class.

I'm just gonna drinking my 10% beer and rock myself to sleep now.

And don't forget that you pay it all back in the end. This is the worst fucking thing ever...P&N -------> BTW

It's because THEIR congress person is not the problem. It's the OTHER congress person that is the problem.

We are far from hitting bottom. Anyone who understands our borrowing is about to be force bly shut off and the only way to pay services is print understands the nightmare that happens next. Check out Zimbabwe.
