Still use optical drives?

Nope, I pulled out my DVD drive years ago to make room for more hard drives. Even now i've moved from 6SATA to 8 SATA and have a space I still don't bother.

With a 50mbit (soon to be 100mbit) internet connection anything that would traditionally be on a disc I can just download, I get all my games through steam anyway the few I get on discs I tend to just grab a disc image of. Even windows I installed off a bootable USB key.

16Gb USB keys are cheap and easier to transport, they're also generally more reliable and more compatible since everything has a USB port even TV's and toasters and whatnot...

No need for optical media now, it's become somewhat of a in-joke between me and tech friends that people still use it 🙂

It's better to have something and not need it, than to need something and not have it.

^^^ That...

I have a loathing for stupid game devolopers that force you to have a stupid disk turning in your DVD to play a game.

^^^ ...and that. 🙄

I will say I haven't quite jumped into the whole 'cloud' technology thing... I don't quite trust it (ignorance is bliss...) and just wonder if this is the next 'flash in the pan' and will pass for the Next Thing soon. I like having my data physically... it's mine; I don't really want to have to rely on someone else's 'service' to retrieve my data. I've already gotten screwed by some of the software companies (*cough* QuickBooks *cough*) by forced obsolesnce... cutting off support and online features.

DVD's can go the way of the floppy drive, in that I don't want them inside the case of my computer, but rather as an external USB device. That way, I only have to buy 1 accessory for the various computers in the house, and can pull it out of a drawer the 3-4 times a year I need it.

Rarely used these days. I do burn photo disks for dissemination to others, but that is done with an external optical.

Sure do. If my motherboard would have had a floppy connection, this build would also have a floppy drive...Since I upgraded one of my DVD burners (I have 2) to SATA, I'm thinking about putting my old ZIP 250 drive in this case...😛

Having a modded xbox, an optical drive is a must for me, and it gets plenty of use. I also find myself burning DVDs now and then, when Windows Media Center or TVersity give me problems streaming. I dont see myself without an internal optical drive for quite some time, if ever.

Absolutely. As already stated, it's $15, and better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. My daily driver has one, my bedroom system has one, my fileserver does not. ~4.5GB is still useful, and they're essentially disposable, unlike flash drives.
