Hey, Ive been trying to get microsoft spyare beta on my sister's laptop (which loves spyware, ive been using lavasoft right now).
When I try to authenticate my windows, the active x program is NOT allowed to run on my computer (It says windows will not do it because it cannot verify the publisher of what its trying to DL, even though its MICROSOFT). Is it malware of some sort doing this, or are there settings that are too high? I tried (in internet options) to change the security level, but it doesnt let me change it off of High.

While it's not too clear, there is an option in there to skip the authent check and just download (of you can download it on your box and move it over on a cd/usb key)...

Sounds like your cert store might be missing/corrupted. Could be malware related, but I've seen that happen before (but don't know why) even on systems I'm sure are clean.

I'd drive around the check and see if things are better after you run the tool.

OK, that worked and I got it without having to verify windows (thats cool i guess).

NEW QUESTION:
Im using Microsoft spyware beta and Ad-aware combination to rid of spyware. I run all of these and I still get pop-ups pretty often. For some reason this computer still continues to get spyware at a faster rate my other computer (im on my sisters laptop right now). Also, my other comp does NOT get pop-ups and I am using the same technique andprogramd to rid of malware These programs are all updated to newest defs (i've made sure).

Any ideas why this could happen? Startup programs include Google e-mail checker and Yahoo messenger. Could these be a culprit? (i exit them once i start up). I also have Symantec corporate up-to-date and it hasnt found anything.

I use AIM and internet explorer, have SP2 and am up to date with window's updates.

ALSO - why does IE just quit on me with no error message when I load new pages sometimes??????

pr0n? you might want to restrict her to a non admin non super user account and see if the adware keeps coming back.

Also, is it running current-generation antivirus software, fully configured to use all options, with current definitions, and doing retroactive scans periodically (ie daily or at least weekly)? Strong passwords on the Administrator-class accounts?

I know what my solution would be. Drop the bomb on it, reformat and reinstall, and get the security tight this time.

edit: ok now, what's this mean: "I also have Symantec corporate up-to-date and it hasnt found anything" You licensed for that, or is it warez? If it's warez, then three guesses where you have a problem

No, I got to UCONN and they give it to us for free, so I as a student am licensed to use it on UCONN campus (im not on campus though lol, im @ home, i keep it up to date by DLing from symantec pages).

As for pr0n, this is my sisters and I have no looked at any on this computer, and while I dont believe my sister has looked at a lot of porn, I am sure she has visited a lot of web sites that love to give me problems. I am trying to not reformat because I dont want to erase important things that I dont know about that my sister does. (however i might get bored and do this anyway, saving as many files as I can - if i transfer files from this comp to my apple and back, will they still be usable? - im sure pics and music will be, but do you know of any specific kind where this doesnt work?
As a side, my sister is not using this laptop anymore, just me (shes away for 2 months). I have no problems on my computer in which i do the same things.

Then piece of cake, vaporize that Windows installation and start over. If you're visiting "pr0blem" sites, then either stop that, or use a Limited account. Give your Admin-class accounts strong passwords and use the Admin accounts only on occasions where you actually need Admin powers.

Let me see if I have this right. Your licensed to it at school for your system there, but you've taken a copy home and put it on your sisters laptop (who doesn't go to UCONN). So, you are in actuality running it unlicensed, do I have this right?

Actually, I was trying to understand what you said, it was actually a serious question. Do you mind answering it?

He's stealing the software and using it without UCONN's permission. In other words he has violated the law and is keeping and using stolen property. I hope that clears it up.

Umm....I dunno what to tell you here, except the same things I tell everyone else that have problems with the spyware crapola that you can't get rid of.

Install Spybot, AdAware, MS Anti Spyware (Which you have done it appears), and then update all three. THEN, reboot and go into safe mode with networking. Run all three, clean, do an online virus scan, and run hijack this, then paste the log into HiJackThis.De.

You should be at least 95% done at this point.

Best of luck. I have had VERY good results with the above method.

No sarcasm in the question, I wanted to make sure I understood you before I stopped trying to help you. I'm a chief architect at Symantec, people stealing from me is a bit of a pet peeve. I'll leave it to the others to help you out further.
