my original plan was to get an x800XL and just be cool

but then i bought an x800XT on eBay for a killer price . . . just a little bit more than what x800XLs are going for now

but it left a pretty nice dent in my wallet . . . not big enough to make me broke, but still pretty big

my question is that is it worth an extra $100 for the performance the XT gives over the XL? i can still resell the XT and get an XL . . .

btw, i'm talking about pci express (obviously)

edit: for some reason, i cant access eBay or Paypal, but i think the total price was a bit under $500 . . . maybe a few $$ more

in a couple of weeks, x800XL will be $350, so we're talking maybe $150, even $200 if i find it at MSRP

that review shows X800XT on some benchmarks (eg, FARCRY) and X800XT PE on others (eg, HL2)

which is it?

edit: its X800XT, not PE

would it be vastly different on an A64 platform instead of P4?

i think i'm going to sell the XT and get the XL

maybe i'll use the XT just for a few days or so, to see the performance (and if it works, after all, its off of ebay :p)

IMHO, 4 FPS avg gain in Farcry and 8 FPS avg gain in HL2 isn't worth $100-$200 extra

A couple of other sites have reviews too (you could google for them). I think the performance benefits under AA and Aniso at high rez are worth it. Im assuming here that after you spend that kind of money on a card, AA and Aniso would would probably be mandatory :)

well first of all, i'm not a real big hardcore gamer . . . but im going to play HL2 and POSSIBLY farcry . . .

i think the x800XL would do good for the price it is, after all, i want to have some $$ to use for upgrades . . .

i'm looking at other sites, only real jump in performance from an x800XL (in the games i plan to play) is the x800XT PE and x850

i need the $$, i'm selling (as soon as i get it)

Given the prices that XL's are still selling for, an XT might not be that much worse as far as bang-for-buck....

Indeed. I've seen XL's sell for as high as $630. Believe me or not. Other such pathetic cases can be seen on eBay from stores, all "Buy It Now"'s.

Right now, getting an XT would be a wise move, considering there's no XL at $399.

But, in about two months, maybe stores will sell them at the suggested price by ATi, in retail boxes.

But in two months we shouldn't be far from the new generation of GPU's from both ATi and nVidia.

So, either get the XT now. Wait a few weeks and get an XL. Or wait a few months, save your money, and brag about the big numbers you'll get in benchmarks with the next Cores.

I think I've actually seen X850XT's at MSRP ($499), surprisingly enough.

But in two months we shouldn't be far from the new generation of GPU's from both ATi and nVidia being paper launched.

Fixed that part of your post for ya :p

Yes in gaming the P4 would be noticably slower. See Anands benches.

I would just keep the X800XT as the XLs are still WAY above MSRP, if they were down ~300 like they were supposed to be, then i would say go for it.

once you start playing games at 1600+ res with AA/AF you realize not even the XT is powerful enough. i had to overclock mine from 500/500 to 550/600 to run tribes vengeance fast enough. using 1680x1050 2xAA/4xAF with athlon 64 3500 on a dell 2005fpw. this is how games were meant to be played.

seller just emailed me, i'll be getting the card on monday . . .

i dont think X800XL will reach $350 for a while, so i guess i will keep the X800XT

edit: anyone know where to find head to head XT vs XL benchmarks? im searching google right now, cant find any

and when do you guys think the XL will hit $350? I'm a student, so $125 is a TON of $$ (i've been saving for this new computer for a VERY long time)

This man speaks the truth. I run my 6800GT at Ultra speeds and it still feels slow sometimes (I've got a 2005FPW also; 1680x1050). I'm sure my Athlon 64 upgrade (whenever that comes) will help a bit though.

Yeah, I can tell the CPU (even at 2.4GHz) is holding the vid card back. I'm just trying to hold out for the revision E A64's that supposedly should be mad overclockers...:)

Supposedly they'll be out in April :p

(And I seriously doubt that any new generation video cards will be out by then either, except perhaps in paper launch form.)

Ideally I'd get a Rev. E S939 A64 when they come out (hopefully in two months), then I could in theory drop a dual-core chip in the same motherboard later on...however at that point I'd probably want a new video card (once it's at the point that the CPU's aren't $500 anymore), so who knows, maybe it's just better to throw together a semi-cheap A64 mobo/CPU now and enjoy it while I can.

Sorry for hijacking your thread though :p
