Hi folks,
Seeing that the Nook Color is such a success, and people keep talking about it here - http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2146534 , I asked one of the mods if we could have a sticky thread with step-by-step instructions on how to tweak the Nook Color, compiled and written by the best and brightest minds of AT.

Mod "pm" has graciously agreed, indicating that "if it's comprehensive and it looks good, I'd sticky it. "

Can we post here the relevant links and/or tutorials? Thanks much!

Here are some previous ideas (thanks to those who provided them, particularly Poofyhairguy):

1) Froyo update is suggested instead of Honeycomb, because it Honeycomb is not yet final, and Froyo retains video hardware acceleration.

Here is one way to install Froyo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938200 *note: original link removed and replaced with a better guide, following suggestions*

2) To get "back" and "menu" buttons, try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944278

3) There is a recommendation to run the updated OS from onboard eMMC, for speed reasons.

*edit*
Poofyhairguy also suggests this link, with lots of helpful information - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12801192

Please feel free to contribute, I'm sure we can make a nice repository of information here.

1) Froyo update is suggested instead of Honeycomb, because it Honeycomb is not yet final, and Froyo retains video hardware acceleration.

It goes like this (in order of stability):

Stock Rooted 2.1- supports everything that can be supported for 2.1, but not stuff that is in later versions of Android (most notably Flash). Has video acceleration (youtube, orb, etc.). Only version that supports the built-in Nook app (all others can only use the Market Nook app).

Nookie Froyo 2.2- supports Flash and most apps. Has working video acceleration. Only doesn't work with apps that need IMEI values, most notably Spectral Souls.

CM7- supports Flash and most apps (even has a IMEI fix to support a few apps Froyo doesn't). Yet is fast moving (above two are stable) and DOESN'T support video acceleration (aka Youtube, Orb, etc).

Honeycomb- completely a demo at this point. Doesn't support MANY apps, runs slow, lacks video acceleration, and has more rough edges than a saw blade.

Here is one way to install Froyo: http://forum.androidcentral.com/bar...ion-install-nookie-froyo-internal-memory.html - WARNING: The page requires registartion to view the files; perhaps someone could be kind enough to mirror it without the need for all of us to sign up.

Please God don't tell people to go through that. That is the hardest possible way to do it.

THIS is the Froyo to use:

Another trick is to map them to your volume buttons using this program:

Here's the guides that I used to install CM7 to internal memory (eMMC) and an overclocked kernel. They both worked with no problems.

CM7 (Gingerbread) to internal memory (eMMC)
Install Dalingrin's overclocked (1.1Ghz) kernel

I think a sticky with the links to the androidcentral and xda forums would probably be better and more current than someone here writing their own guide. Unless of course someone wants to do that and keep up with it.

BTW, good idea OP.

no offense to anyone...but it was decided long ago that this type of thing is not welcome here.

There are websites dedicated to helping people with technical things like this.

He's just living up to his name.

I appreciate this thread. Nice to have everything consolidated into a single thread. Looking elsewhere (XDA, NookDevs, etc) and the information is spread all over.

Great idea. A while ago I suggested a seperate forum for tablets as they are obviously becoming a major "player" in everyday electronics. I would like to resubmit the idea. We could also create a subforum within the main Gadgets forum. Just an idea...

Probably not a bad idea at this point. They're clearly here to stay.

i found a barely used one for $170 on craigslist a couple weeks back...killer deal! running CM7 on it now, and will use it this weekend mounted in my car for gps/pandora on long trips. It can use my phone's GPS via the "tethergps" widget

Or now we can use Bluetooth GPSes. I have been looking and they are super cheap on ebay- people are finally replacing all those GPS-less BBs...

Good starting point here including first time backup instructions:
http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...color-now-what-aka-complete-idiots-guide.html

I'm doing all my reading now, waiting for my stuffs to be delivered, I will most likely run dual boot Froyo and Honeycomb from the eMMC but also made sure to order a class 10 micro sd stick just in case I want to try booting and running from it as some folks were complaining how slow class 2 and 4 sd cards are

So I am now dual booting CM7 and Froyo and I have to say that original reports of bluetooth were conservative. I can use my Wiimote from well more than 13 inches away- more like 4 feet!

Once we get a build with Bluetooth, and DSP in CM7 then we have a stable daily OS to hold us out until Honeycomb comes. That is helpful considering the Honeycomb work hasn't started.

I really like OC CM7, minus the youtube not working and software flash being choppy.
Why is getting DSP working such a hard problem for CM7? Is it fundamentally different form Froyo?

Question about upgrading CM7 nightlies from CWR disk zip image.
If I want to preserve all my apps and settings and upgrade from one nightly to another, do I still want to format system, data, and cache as per instructions? Or is that just for initial install?
