Stick Shift Driving??

guyver01

I have a job interview on Monday for a position, which involves some driving... but they require manual transmission driving..

I have never driven manual..

can i learn it over the weekend? Any good sites to read?

Thanks

You need somebody to teach you. Otherwise you could really hurt somebody.

You could probably get it down in a weekends time. But you'll be very sketchy.

You better practice stop and go traffic driving every hour you are awake for the weekend. It took me a few hours to learn the basics of stick but took me a whole month to perfect it. If you go there monday morning and they ask you to show them that you can drive stick, I am certain that you will stall atleast once.

no.

you can't learn how to fly by reading, right? so browsing 'how-to-do' websites won't help at all.

find a beater car and learn by experience.

you also sound like you dont even know the basics of a manual transmission or even how it works so I would be very doubtful that you will get it down by monday.

Yes you need hands on practical experience. See if you can get into a stick car for the weekend and practice shifting especially in traffic (stop/go/getting into gear uphill without rolling back, breaking, hand break). I am pretty sure you will make a complete jack ass of yourself on monday if you don't practice.

Can you learn it well enough in one weekend to drive on public roads? Sure.

Will it be obvious you learned the weekend before? You better believe it.

It's like how motorcycle riders can spot a noob rider from a mile away even though they can get from point A to B.

Or Or Or..

you can learn the basics of basketball but you will look like a complete jackass playing 5 on 5

Or Or Or...

you can learn spanish but you will sound llike a moron speaking it

ok enough metaphors for me

Short answer - yes. Long answer - no.

You can "learn" it in 5 minutes, but it'll take you more than a couple of hours on a weekend to really be good at it.

Hahha this reminds me of the time I first learned how to drive stick. The week I learned I was at a busy left turn signal where I was the first car on the lane. The light turns green, I try to go, Stallll........ Panicking I quickly turn on the engine again, look in my rear view mirror where 6 cars are honking at me, Panicking even more i gun it, STALLL even harder. Finally I try one more time and this time I make it right when the signal light turns yellow! I kindve got a kick out of that.

LOL 🙂 That's pretty funny, my dad is a truck driving instructing at a local school here, you should see how some of his students stall an 18 wheeler on some of the busy intersections...I'm talking about 5-10 lights before stuff gets moving hehe.

Well, lets see. you are in NYC. No jobs require you drive a stick unless:

a. garage/valet (parking)
b. cdl/delivery. (trucking)
3. transport/shuttle (dealer services)

Out of those jobs, driving a stick is the least of your worries.

Did you ask what kind of manual tranny vehicles, you will be asked to drive?

If they want you to drive a 25,999 Lb Gross weight
delivery van that has a 5 speed manual tranny, with a 2 speed rear end,

thats a lot different than driving a Honda car,with a 5 speed;
which is also different from driving an old manual shifted fork lift.

Practice on the type vehicle you will need to drive would help.

If the job is like at Pep Boys, changing tires, and they will want you to drive
customers cars in,and out of the bldg,
then just a basic course on driving a standard shift car will prob do fine.

Some Driving schools do have standard shift cars, and teach how to drive standard.

Good luck.

My first vehicle I had on the road was a 1966 Chevy pickup,
3 on the tree.With a 283 V8 🙂

Can you learn to drive smoothly in a weekend? No.

Agreed. It took me a good 2 weeks before I was able to drive stick well.
