With a cowling missing? Flying a plane in "that condition" is like driving your car with the hood taken off. Suer, you can see the engine, but the engine is still there, and likely still functioning.

That damage probably only causes a bit of increased drag on that side which isn't a big deal. Especially when you consider that when an airline needs to get a new engine to one of it's airplanes at a distant airport they can simply tuck it under the wing of a 747 and fly it there.

Planes are very tough once in the air. If you go a search for the Hawaiian flight that lost 1/3 of it's roof, you would see that.

Now, that kind of issue on takeoff...

You would be surprised at how much damage a plane can sustain and still fly. Landing in some cases is a whole other story though.
