Has anyone tried this? I just went to go get a cup of coffee and noticed that we had a bunch of packets of stevia extract where the sugar is.

I use it all the time (liquid). It has a slightly different flavor, but once you get used to it, it's great. Far superior to some laboratory engineered sugar alcohol concoction...

Does it have the same odd flavor as sugar substitutes?

Isn't it only legally permissible to sell it as a supplement and not a sweetener?

Yes. The packet looks just like a pack of sugar but it says Stevia Extract Supplement.

jhayx7: It doesn't have the odd after-taste that sugar substitutes do. It's hard to describe, it's sweet, but there's another flavor undercurrent to it...which is the "leaf" I suppose :D
torpid: Yup, which is ridiculous. Thanks FDA!

Its ok. It does have an aftertaste. It does not taste as good as splenda or even sweetners like equal (saccharin). I personally don't think you'll find a better sweetner than splenda, except for regular sugar.

it smells like herb. I used it a lot in college and it caused me depression. I quit using it since then.

i am quite knowledgeable about stevia because i am invested in a company that manufactures 1/3 of the worlds supply. they just released their product in Kroger this week. if you want to know the name PM me, otherwise i will be lambasted for trying to pump my investment. one of the biggest drawbacks of stevia has been the 'bitter' taste however the manufacturing process has greatly improved over the past year and stevia is often 'cut' with maltodextrin which helps alleviate the bitterness.
