A leader is lost on the liberal side.

What type of replacement will Obama choose to replace?

Kinda expected this considering his age. I don't know who he will choose, but I do not think that replacing Stephens with an Obama appointee will ultimately change the idealogical makeup/leanings of the court.

How so?

Stevens is the leader of the liberals on the court.

Good thing Scott Brown won his senate seat.
Now the GOP can play by the rules the Democrats setup under GWBs term.

Leading candidate rumors:

Elena Kagan
Merrick Garland
Diane Wood

Of those 3 - Merrick is by far the best pick judicially and politically will be the easiest for BHO to get confirmed.

Kagan is by far the worst on the list as she has ZERO judicial experience. Hell, she had no experience when appointed by BHO to solicitor general.

Any bets on who BHO will choose?

Whoever Obama appoints, my guess is that every single Republican will be in lockstep against the nomination.

Hopefully someone that does not have to fit the standard...

Went to Ivy League, did such and such work, sat on court XYZ, etc…

Look at the SC history and who is there now and you can see that is not what it was supposed to be. Be nice to get more broad views and opinions then just LeftVsRight

I am sure Obama has a healthy young liberal with family history of long lifespans lined up.

Bush got his nominees confirmed, except for that stupid woman who was blocked by his own party.

You sure. Look at Sonia Sotomayor.

She is type 1 diabetic and her dad died of a heart problem at 42. Seems she is not one to break any age records. :awe:

Shhhh. Conservatives don't want to remember history as it actually happened. They want to remember the bullshit versions they cling to to justify their horrible behavior towards the rest of humanity.

He got his SCOTUS nominees confirmed, because he nominated good people and there's too much public scrutiny of SCOTUS nominees for the Dems to get by with not giving them a vote. Hopefully the Pubbies will operate by the same example the Dems set, vote on SCOTUS and block votes on all other "extreme" nominees - which will probably cover all Obama nominees.

Roberts I would agree on, but Alito was a horrible pick.

Well, Obama just stated he wants an activist judge who will use his position correct what Obama feels is an imbalance between money and regular citizens.

Hit rewind on the dvr to catch it, cause there ain't no internet links yet.

He used the word "activist" eh? I'll believe that when I hear it. It isn't that I don't think he could nominate an "activist" judge. It's that this term has become such a pejorative, I just doubt he would openly use the term. Would be a pretty serious gaff.

Because that's what picking someone for the highest court in the land is all about. Slapping the other side in the face.

They'd have to be idiots to oppose Garland's nomination if that's who Obama picks. From everything I've heard he's much more of a centrist than Stevens, as well as highly qualified to sit on the Supreme Court. Kagan on the other hand...

Maybe we'll get Laurence Tribe.

Maybe, but I kind of doubt it. He's written so many books the committee hearings would be brutal. He can't really be as vague in his answers as most nominees try to be these days, considering his opinions are plainly written on paper.

No, Obama is not stupid enough to say the word "activist". But if what one does is do everything to describe an activist judge, just without using the word, well, then it's my right to call it what it is.

I can already hear the questions that will be asked at the hearing: Do you think a mandate to buy a product or service is unconstitutional?

I very much doubt Obama will make a nomination even half as bad as GWB's nomination of Harriet Miers.

I'm sure he'll appoint another unqualified or radical candidate like he did before. The difference is that this time the good guys can actually stand firm and block such radicals if they want to. I'm not sure that's gonna happen though, many of them cave to the pressure of the MSM to send liberals to the bench.
