Moore should have sued for more money.

I quit watching the NHL after this. All Bertuzzi got was a 20 game suspension (don't count the following year they had no hockey), which should have been a great deal more.

It was not a good hit on Naslund and he got penalized for it. If I remember correctly, Moore had already fought someone earlier in that game (the one he was injured in). It should have been done with. What happened to Moore, Bertuzzi should have been suspended a lot longer or outright banned until Moore could play again. Since Moore was totally unable to play again, the NHL would have been better off with Bertuzzi not playing at all.

It was a freak injury. You hit 100 players in the same way on any given night, and the other 99 will skate away just fine. But 100 guys will get penalties, probably even suspensions.

If that hit by itself was bad enough for a lifetime ban, you could ban about half the players currently in the NHL.

Yeah I mean come on, nobody is going to defend horrendous crap like that, but terrible blindside dirty hits happen multiple times per year, every single year in the NHL. Stepan got crushed by Prust this year in the play offs which broke his jaw, and very well could have knocked him out cold. Do you want Prust to go to jail or something..? It was a dirty hit, seconds after Stepan had passed the puck and the NHL punished Prust as they saw fit.

All in all, it's not our place to judge these players. Just in shock you literally abandoned an amazing sport over this issue.

So you're basing your knee jerk reaction to one small outburst over the nearly century old NHL?

Moore did all he could by suing the team/player responsible for his injury and suffering. If you think this was assault, then the district attorney should have been bringing assault charges on Bertuzzi.

Btw, you're missing some great hockey lately. Shame really.

Edit: You edited your post and it's not quoted here I think... but the hit made by Prust is similar in context. It was a rebuttal hit, done purposely to harm Stepan. He went full speed, shoulder to jaw and caused bodily harm. It's really not fair to base a punishment on the injury caused, like stated above. If Prust had done the same thing and Stepan was totally okay.. Would you tell me he should have only got a 2 minute minor for roughing? Or if he had broken Stepan's neck and ruined his career...should he have gotten more than 2 games?

To be unbiased and fair, the NHL needs to punish the act which was done, not the resulting injury. If the act is deemed outside of the sporting event and purposely done to cause great harm, then charges should be brought against that player for assault.

The DA was investigating it for charges. They did not pursue charges because they would have had to do this for all kinds of on ice incidents. I forgot what got them to not file charges, but I believe they had a talk with some people in hockey and decided not to file.

It just so happened that his career was ended over a petty vendetta. I think 20 games was far too lenient. He should have had a year at a minimum (the lockout of 2004-2005 should not count for suspended time).

You are right though, the NHL was extremely fun to watch.

He didn't "slam" his head into the ice, Moore fell unconsciously, Bertuzzi fell on top of him. For all we know, Moore's own teammates piling on could have done the damage.

He has routinely injured players with blind hits and been penalized for it, IIRC. While not a sucker punch, I can't imagine putting your entire body into someone skating backwards is much safer. As far as I know, he hasn't ended anyone's career, but that doesn't mean much. His hits are not only illegal, but dangerous and could potentially end someone's career.

Well I'm not sure what to say. The NHL probably has a handbook in place or a guideline that states on the policy of giving out suspensions. Brandon Prust is the guy dishing the hit on Stepan. He was suspended for two games for that hit. So using that as a guide line, Bertuzzi did something 10x as worse than fracturing a guys jaw in multiple places and probably giving him a minor concussion.

I'd like to think Bertuzzi didn't want to end this guy's career, let alone literally break his neck. It was misguided hockey rage that ended very poorly for Moore and obviously shouldn't happen. He was likely awarded tens of millions of dollars for his suffering.

Just sad that the NHL lost a fan over this, I think it's a bit of an over reaction by you. At least you still watch college?

He did suffer consequences, he got a 20 game suspension. The OP's issue is this wasn't harsh enough.

I think the NHL should hand out MORE 20 game suspensions. A lot of punishment dished out by the player safety office has been too favorable to star players, or because it was during the playoffs.

I watch college hockey some times. Hockey is an awesome sport to watch.

Fighting is banned in Junior A hockey. Soon as those gloves come off, you're out for the remainder of the game.

The amount of fighting in the NHL is controversial. Especially when you have idiots like Don Cherry going up there and saying how it's an integral part of the game. It really is all about blood sport though, no different than boxing or UFC. There are a lot of people who only watch the game the fights. The NHL knows that, and they have no intention of changing it. Especially as they try to push into markets outside Canada and the north-eastern US.

Hockey will always be a rough sport but dropping your gloves and whaling on some due on the other team just strikes me as being childish. Though half those players can't even count to potato, so it's not a big shock that they're still all for it.
