halfadder, Please continue your rant :) You obviously know a great deal about Apple and I find it very enlightening to hear from those with information outside my normal scope of interest.

That's like saying .net is just a marketing buzzword.

NeXTSTEP = BSD atop Mach + an entirely new object oriented development environment. OPENSTEP added to this and it was eventually turned into Mac OS X.

Microsoft's .net is somewhat similar. Longhorn will be the first major release based heavily on the .net 2.0 framework, though the kernel will be based on the mature and stable NT/2K/XP, just as NeXTSTEP used the mature and stable Mach kernel and BSD userland.

For developers, .net makes life a lot easier. It's finally an OO framework that makes sense. MFC was a very half hearted attempt, and Windows development before MFC was really a nasty horrible experience.

NeXTSTEP did the same for Unix, which was traditionally a system based on many small components. C is great for basic applications and X was fine for basic GUI stuff, but they become huge limitations for large scale projects. NeXT created a whole new OO framework and an much improved GUI based on Display Postscript to give developers printing "for free".

In a way, yeah, they're just boxes... Mac, PC, same thing. Since about 1990, the hardware has remained very similar and now the OS concepts are growing closer too.

BTW, for a good Unix timeline, check out this:

Spare us, Apple designs their products to be appealing to a niche market. When they want their product to be widely accepted they target it towards the masses, of which the product then is presented in the most dumbed down it can be - simple enough not to scare away new and unconfident users, yet still provide the niche features their diehard niche fan base wants.

OSX has the same age old Apple weakness. It may be "ahead of its time" for you because you're a niche user, obviously pleased with what Apple is supplying to you for your particular needs.

Im on and have used PCs for several years now. I like it very much, building and putting together my systems. So I really dont know what the h3ll youre talking about. Its ahead of my time becuase Im a niche user? Do you even know what youre talking about? I dont think you do LOL
