Steve Gibson of grc.com is really dedicated to helping fight cyber terrorism. His website is a valuable service to internet users. I trust him, and utilize his programs to feel more secure about my computer security.

There is an interview in the May issue of CPU that really is depressing. He feels that the future of internet security is bleak. He doesn't think there are enough safeguards to protect the most vital part of the internet- that being the massive array of servers around the world that move the packets of data from point to point. I'm no expert on firewalls, but he makes it sound like no level of protection can stop a determined invader.

I know he's doing his best, but what a pessimist!

There is no level of protection that can stop a determined invader. If someone REALLY wants your router to be down, and they cant hack into it, they can cut the cable going to it. If the cable is in a building with lots of security, they can blow up the building. Nothing is ever entirely secure.

And there is always "social engineering" - manipulation of people.

Hard to guess where things are going though.

gibson and other "security experts" are paranoid so the rest of us don't have to be.

I find it hard to advise friends and associates on how to protect themselves when I have been victimized by viruses myself. I try to be careful with attachments and downloads from various sources, but I still have had some real headaches trying to clean up and restore infected systems.
