Sterling/Waldman worst announcers in the MLB?

Ok, I'm a huge Yankee fan but these 2 really need to go. I was listening to the game when I changed to the Mets broadcast and was very entertained with their broadcast. Rose and Hagin were talking about the old Orioles stadium (memorial stadium) and it was actually interesting.

I then went back to the yankee game and as usual Waldman is yacking it up with nonsense and her non stop commercials ("GEICO dot com"). Sterling is a clown and seems to be more interested in his stupid home run calls "You're on the mark, Teixeira" "Swishilicious", etc
You can see them all here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Sterling_(sportscaster)
Oh and heres a piece of Waldman in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdtn0Z4o8cM

The guy never gives the score in the middle of an inning and really never has a good story. On TV Michael Kay has his head so far up the yankee's butt its not even funny but atleast he can tell a good story from time to time.

You would think with all the money the Yanks spend they could actually get someone descent in the booth. Ugh

/end rant

Is this the guy that says "an A-Bomb, from A-Rod" and "A Tex message from Texeira, you're on the mark Texeira"? I freaking hate that guy. Such an annoying voice.

We Phillies fans have to suffer with colorless nonentities for lead announcers and the two worst color men in all of sports, Sarge (Gary Matthews Sr.) on TV and Larry Anderson on the radio.

Sarge was a great hitter as a player but absolutely SUCKS as an analyst. Nobody uses more rambling words only to misstate the obvious. He is cringe-worthy difficult to listen to every single time he winds up.

Anderson is not only not that bright, but lazy and disinterested as well.

Sad fall from grace. We once had the absolute best duo, imho, in all of baseball, Whitey and Harry. As Whitey (Rich Ashburn) used to say, "Hard to believe, Harry."

Yes, they are both terrible. I loved Sterling's call of a Matsui home run last year by saying, 'An A-Bomb by A-R..... Matsui'.

Kalas was great. He had such an awesome voice.....sucks that he was replaced by someone sub-par....but I guess its hard to replace greatness. I feel for the folks out in LA when Scully has to be replaced.

Oh and I hate Stuart Scott from ESPN....can the guy go a couple minutes without speaking ebonics??

yup, same guy

I fucking can't stand Michael Kay. Seriously, I'm a huge Yankees fan but Sterling, Kay, and Waldman are all unlistenable. I actually mute the games.

Best Michael Kay highlight ever:

Yeah, that's him. I think the first one he did was "Bernie goes Boom!" for Bernie Williams, which I actually liked (mainly because I love Bernie Williams.) But when he started making them for each Yankee it got grating. I think Sterling actually used to not be so bad (like back in the mid '90s). I remember him as being a little more laid back.

Waldman & Sterling are horrible. I'm a Mets fan, so I got to listen to the Voice of Summer, Bob Murphy.

The one area the Mets have been able to beat the Yankees over the years is the broadcasting crews. I think the Yankees generally go too much for the ass-kissers.

Bill White & Phil Rizzuto were awesome, though.

I agree with you 100%. In the booth is the only place that I envy Mets fans.

🙁

There's not easily accessible crying smilies, but that's what I feel like doing whenever I am reminded of Phil Rizzuto calling games. They should lock all the yankees broadcasters in a room and make them listen to Phil's calls for 40 hours a week.

No, on second thought, nothing would be more grating than to hear Michael Kay say "Oh, Holy Cow!"

Just beat them with sticks.

Kay/Sterling/Waldman are all awful.

Ken Singleton is the only Yankees announcer worth a damn. I remember a game last year where it was just him doing Yanks vs. Orioles (he's an ex-Oriole) and it was fantastic.

There are a lot of bad baseball announcers out there. Kay/Sterling/Waldman, yes. Hawk Harrelson on the White Sox broadcasts. Ron Dibble on the Nationals broadcasts. etc.

Not even getting into some of the "national" announcers on ESPN and Fox, who are almost all terrible. (Though Orel Hershiser is pretty good.)

Ugh, JOE MORGAN

"Well the pitcher threw a low pitch and on a low pitch the batter is more likely to hit a ground ball which could setup a double play. Because when there's a runner on first and you get a ground ball, you can have a chance for a double play."

I liked when the Yankees had David Cone in there last year for color.

Also, Kay isn't nearly as bad as some of the Fox Sports announcers. I remember earlier this year, the Yankees were playing someone (I think it was Tampa) and the YES feed was broken so I had to watch the FSN feed...uhg it was painful.

Yeah, I know Cone and O'Neil have done it recently. Recent players can be a little stiff, but I don't mind that. It takes some time to get comfortable behind the microphone.

Yeah, Singleton's good. Especially since he's player who's become a play-by-play guy, rather than an analyst.

Ron Darling on the Mets TV broadcasts is fantastic. Keith Hernandez is sometimes very good, but he loses interest pretty easily and it's clear he's simply there for the paycheck.

Orel's good sometimes on the ESPN broadcasts, but suffers because of Joe Morgan's presence. Morgan is, to use Blackjack200's term, UGH.

Vin Scully is great, even at 80. I really enjoyed when he & Joe Garagiola had MLB's GOTW on TV.

Tom McCarthy is very good on Philllies TV, and Gary Thorne (ESPN & Orioles) is great when he sticks to play-by-play, less so when he spouts off.

Tim McCarver's OK, he used to be awesome, but I think he's been used up.

Stuart Scott is the ultimate, "I think I'm on the inside of everything," guy. I can't stand him. Last night he completely botched the highlights of the NBA Finals game. He's just horrible. One of these days I'm going to sneak into his hotel and shave of his fucking eyebrow.

I really like O'Neil but he's my favorite Yankee of all time so that opinion is a little biased.

Yep, I like Singleton but McCarver is awful. He is so anti-Yankee its not even funny. He's the opposite of Kay.

haha....glad to see I'm not the only one

If it's the "A-bomb from A-Rod" guy, then yes, he's awful.

I like the Tigers' announcers a lot even though I'm sure they're average. If you don't like your team's announcers, that's when you know they really blow.

Ron Stearling is a favourite target of the Opie & Anthony Show. All of sports radio considers him a laughing stock. I intern at a local radio station and the sports desk hates him. Somebody must like him but his awful, forced reads and bad writing wouldn't get him a job at many places.

When McCarver was broadcasting for the Mets, some felt he was too critical. After the Mets let him go, many felt he became anti-Mets. I've heard a lot of people complain he's anti-Yankees.

The most anti-Yankees announcer I hear on a regular basis is Joe Morgan. It's like he thinks it's still the 70's or something.

I liked Ernie Harwell. The old-time announcers are the best.

I don't like home-team announcers who pander to the fans. I want an honest critique of the team, and I want information about the opposing team.

Howie Rose on Mets radio is good. Lots of enthusiasm, good cadence, and does a very good job with the HR calls of the opposing teams.

Bill White & Phil Rizzuto were awesome, though.

I miss that pairing. Listened to the two of them growing up. Actually also like the Scooter with Bobby Murcer and even Tom Seaver as well.

Kay is tolerable, but listening to the Stirling and Waldman on the radio is painful. I have to admit though that I enjoyed Stirling's "The Yankees win" call in '96 when the Yankees won the Series. As a lifelong Yankees fan, 1978 to 1996 felt like a LONG time.
