Stereo receiver reccomendations

Current non working stereo receiver is a Receiver 2 from nakamichi, a couple of the capacitors on the board went bad (again, it's been repaired once) and the unit wont work.

So I have been looking lately for a replacement stereo receiver. I really don't have a need for surround just yet.

I've been looking at the Harman/Kardon 3380 and the 3480, which are very similar minus the vmax and higher wattage of the 3480. The 3380 has 80w, the 3480 has 120w. Power isn't everything however. Both amps have the same THD published rating on the HK website.

Are there any other suggestions? I know there was this thread: here but to be quite honest, i kinda want something more 'modern' (and possibly more reilable and better built since its newer) though certainly if i can find a quality 'vintage' reciever for the same price as the HK's, I"d go for it. I would prefer it to have PHONO input, otherwise i'd prob have to shell out more money than the reciever to buy a quality phono preamp.

The speakers it'd be powering are JBL Studio Series S36II, or AR 98LS when i get around to fixing the foam rot. I plan to get some newer floorstandings; I've been eyeing JBL Studio S312/310, or the Northridge E100 (or paradigm refrence studio, but waaaaaaaay outta my price range right now). I want to get a sub maybe, but I dont know how good the PSB Subsonic 6i i've been looking at sounds with music. The S36II lack low extension. Subs are a whole nother thread, as well as the speakers.

I've been away from the audiophile scene for a bit, but isn't a move from Nakamichi to HK quite a drop?

I would've guessed a Nakamichi amp would be replaced by a mcintosh or mark levinson or whatever....

whoa, you give Nakamichi way too much credit. They make (and made, moreso) great products, but it's certainly not in the top echelon of hifi elite.

But depending on how much you want to spend OP, the Yamaha 777 is pretty nice for a low/mid-level system. And depending on your needs, the used route is always fun...an older Arcam int. amp, for instance, something like that? Audiogon'll have tons for you to look through.
 
what are you looking for? a stereo receiver, or a stereo amp, or what? specify a bit more.

i got my marantz 1120 for 100$ shipped. and ill wait for ribbon13 to post all his ebay links.

stereo reciever. I've been thinking about seperates if the price is right.

I've always liked Krell stuff, but that is waaaaaaaaaaaaay outta my price range 😀

The nakamichi Receiver2 sounds good, i'm not sure how the HK 3480 would compare to it. I would not myself consider the Receiver2 super high end by any means, but sure beats the sony my father used to have. I've also been looking at Denon, Onkyo...I dont want to get somthing too cheap, though i don't want to skimp either. Perhaps a seperate preamp and amp might be more fleixible with regards to the future.

about how much would those two go for on average? I'd have no idea on those items, but i am sure they are of fine quality.

the PAT4 im not sure, it has a buy it now though. and the dynaco 400 will go for about 250 or so, but at 200x2 at 8 ohms and 300x2 at 4, with the possibility of 600x1 at 4ohms its pretty much unstoppable.

and ribbon13 will be in here once he compiles his ebay list.

yeah, i've been busy with work lately (target, i know, buts it's something), and gone fishin with my pops. school is sorta so-so...and also was busy with a schoalrship competition, thankfully thats over for now.

I will try to get up to speed with all the YACT and the like sometime within the next two weeks.
 
I was going to come in here and tell you about harmanaudio on ebay, but it looks like you're way ahead of me.

My AVR-325 came spotless from them.

Check out the Cambridge Audio Azur integrated amps on audioadvisor.com, I just picked up the 340a for $200 shipped. Their top of the line one, the 640a was very well received by a lot of the high end magazines like what hifi and stereophile.

I looked at the 340a, but it does not have a phono pre stage integrated, it says a module will be availible, but the one on audioadvisor is not for the 340a series. My father has quite a few LPs that both he and I listen to, so a phono stage integrated would be nice without me having to spend another $100 on a quality phono pre-amp. The 340a, 540a, and 640a all look like solid integrated amps. Perhaps I will try one someday when i have more money.

Right now I'm leaning towards the Denon AVR-685 or the HK 3480; it'd be $250 for the HK at most and $275 for the Denon at most. The Denon has less than .005% THD @8ohms while the HK has less than .007% THD @ 8ohms. They both look like solid stereo receivers.

I don't quite have the room on the rack for seperate components; can't see myself spending $500 for a new rack.

I will probably try and get the nakamichi SR-4A stasis amp (along with some other speakers) for my bedroom, the Denon or HK will be for the bigger room upstairs.
